People who use $4$ as the absolute trading criteria and cut it down to within $5 are doing this for the wrong reason. That is my opinion on your friend's dilemma.

Can you send me some of these beer coupons? I'm sure my wife would appreciate the savings.

I can't understand why this issue keeps coming up. You guys realize that it's not just 15% off as we get charged 7.7% (approx. according to my last order) CA tax on the beer , right? So that $10 beer is not $8.50, it's $9.15 after that tax that we pay, so we're talking a whole 8.5% difference in pricing here. So, about $2.50 on a $30 beer (Black Tuesday, M3) for example.

Are you insinuating that coupons that can be used for beer purchases don't exist, or just asking for a socialist handout here?

    Just a handout.

I have traded all of my RS allocations at the normal list price. $40 for CR, $30 for Fruet, etc. Nobody has tried to haggle over the $ so far, and if they did I'd probably just trade with someone else. I try to keep $ pretty close anyway. It seems to be common here that we don't factor in membership costs, trustees, shipping, tickets, driving to events, etc. In my opinion if we don't factor those we don't factor discounts either.

if i'm trading $50~100 worth of beer, and we're $5 off, i don't say "hey pick up some locals for $4$!" if my trading partner needed to grab that extra bottle out of some OCD kind of thing, more power to him/her, but i'm not sweating $5...

Everyone pays tax on the beer they buy excluding only a couple of states.

I've traded for two RS beers (BT and CR). $4$ never came up. When beers are limited-releases, $4$ is such a minor factor in trades, because the "value" of the beer is not accurately captured by the sticker price. But, to each their own. As long as both parties agree to a trade and feel good about it, $4$ and other isolated factors don't matter.

Yes, but we all have different tax rates, and on $50-$100 worth of beer you're suddenly talking about potentially a couple of bucks difference. Which is the same couple of bucks people bitch about with RS beers. Or god forbid a no-tax state trades with an 8-10% tax state - that's like an entire extra bottle of beer!

The point is, any which way you slice it, squabbling over a couple of bucks is sillyness.

Does anyone know where a thread about the good/bad/amazing/ugly of this RS is? Sounds really cool, but would love to hear more.

The old site had lots. Pros: only way to get access to many great beers. Cons: expensive bottles, need a trustee if you're not local, you end up dropping a lot of your beer budget on one brand's beers.

I like it, but I'm reasonable about it, and I have a great trustee. I split my allocations with a couple of others, which IMO is the way to go.

yeah, i can't see how the RS would fail to be worth it if you have the money.

i didn't get in on the ground floor (or even the current floor) because a) i'm stupidly against the hassle of organizing shipping and stuff, and b) i'm stupidly sticker-shocked by the up front RS price, when i know very well that i'd pay even more than that if i found all these beers on the shelf over the course of a year. note that (a) and (b) include the word 'stupid'.

IMO $4$ is based off of the price you pay. If I am doing a $4$ trade and I pay $25 dollars for a bottle I am trading for $25 in beer in return. To me, feeling cut short on the return on the beer you are getting a discount on seems like you would just be getting upset about other people getting more in return. It may just be me but if you are concerned about other people getting more than you or getting cut short maybe not trading is the right decision.

Only make trades you are comfortable with, if you have ask for more than what you paid to feel comfortable that is fine but just be honest about what you paid and your intentions. I have a problem with calling a trade $4$ unless the $ is what you personally paid.

What someone 'paid' doesn't make sense all the time. Sometimes stuff increases in value, sometimes, as many underwater holders of home mortgages would attest, they'd be happy to go $4$ for what they've paid.

I have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a room, gas $, time off work etc. . . to go to some of these RR/Bruery/LA events/releases, not to mention ticket prices, memberships etc. . .

I don't particularly use these in figuring the value of a beer out. . . but if someone were to act like a dickface regarding a few dollars over what I actually paid, I wouldn't hesitate to remind them of all the other actual costs before I move on past trading with that person (especially since 90% of my trades seem to be unsolicited requests from the other party, God I hate when people haggle with you over $1-3 for a beer THEY are asking for).

What if someone is buddies with a brewery and they got the bottles free, or half price for being a loyal customer? I don't think I'm entitled to that beer "$4$" what they personally paid. Beer is a business, commodity etc. . . for all the negative connotations that entails, it is reality. Not everything is worth what it was originally paid for.

Try getting someone who bought Apple stock 20 years ago to sell you their shit $4$. Oh yeah, we're talking about beer. Well, try getting someone who bought some Cantillon 20 years ago to sell you their shit $4$.

Good thing I am just trading for beer and not gas, hotel and so on.
