I'm really surprised they don't straight up say it's not allowed. It seems like a line of 200 people over night in San Marcos would draw enough attention anyways.

Well, yes, but you can't justify murdering someone by saying, "Well, I guess you drive the speed limit all the time." Driving 5 mph over the speed limit is very different than having open containers in public and putting the restaurant, and maybe future events, at risk. Can't you sit there and not drink because the venue asked you not to? You're about to gorge yourself on alcohol for hours. I think you can manage to respect the establishment that is bringing all of these great beers to you.

As long as they are spending money in San Marcos and aren't raising too much hell, they don't care.

And seriously, pinkgrenade? Rude to the owner? I think he has no problem with the bottle share whatsoever - in fact I think he likes it, likes the hype.

He very well could. Bars have gotten popped for a lot less though, so that's on them.

I suspect there will be a little more enforcement of no open containers this year with a security guard on site. Last year got a tad out of hand and cops did show up in the late morning, but for parking violations not open containers.

And yet, one cop who's having a bad day could have an absolute fucking field day if they so desired.

I have no idea what Ivan's real feelings are, but I suspect he mostly accepts the fact that people are going to do what they want, so he may as well cover his ass by saying he'd prefer there not be bottle shares since it is technically putting him at risk.

However, I think a lot of people take it too far. You're (you in the general since, not you specifically) sitting in line to get into an event with one of the best taplists San Diego County will see every year, and by the time the door opens you're already half drunk and your palate is shot. If you just want to line up for trade bait, then great, drink in the parking lot, get your bottles and go pass out.

Neither side of the argument is going to convince the other - this topic was beaten half to death after last year's event, and this thread is already heading down that same path. I hope that having a security guard keeps the situation under better control, because if you take last year's frustration from people who didn't get bottles and amplify it with the fact that releases keep attracting more people, there's real potential for problems. Just because everyone is drinking expensive craft beer, doesn't mitigate the fact that you have a bunch of drunk people sitting in a parking lot overnight, some of whom are going to end up disappointed.

Are you assuming that because they aren't selling bottles the way you think is best, that the people of Churchills are "asking" you to drink beer on their parking lot and adjacent properties?
I think it's pretty apparent that some people will do whatever they want whether it is legal or not, or possibly bring negative consequences to a place like Churchills. And people will justify their actions with reasoning that somehow makes sense to them. And your comment is a perfect example of that mentality.

I agree. Security guard overnight makes me wonder if a share will happen. I'll probably still line-up, but that definitely means the time will go by much slower.

You think he has no problem with the parking lot bottle share? Jesus christ, it's worse than I thought.

Huh? I'm just saying if they are truly worried about the consequences of having a bunch of people camp out in front of their bar, they would change they way they distribute bottles. But they want it to be a shit show. Security guard or not, people will still bottle share. I'm not even lining up this year so I could care less. I'll be there later in the day when there's no line.

Apparently, any sense of personal responsibility has gone right out the window.

One of these days, a beer release line is going to go so far across the line that it fucks things up for an entire city's worth of breweries and beer geeks. Maybe it won't be this one, but considering the continually degrading attitude that people have, I don't expect it to be too far into the future.

I agree with this to a point, but I think it ignores how much the bottlesharing line culture has grown over the past several years, and how it has morphed from a few bottles in line for an hour before a release into all-night camping and massive shit shows. There are a lot of causes of this - bigger lines necessitate lining up earlier if you want to be guaranteed a purchase, the expansion of craft beer culture, etc.

Yes, Ivan could outright prevent it by not selling bottles in the fashion he does, but really, people can't just not drink for a few hours? It seems so silly to me that the focus of this conversation is on how he chooses to sell bottles, rather than people's lack of control over their own actions.

Revoke wristbands, kick them off the property, any number of possible actions. How do you think that ends when someone refuses to leave though?
