Agree. As joefuzz said quite eloquently, it's more take a chance on us and jump into the deep end than come get some specialty beers we have a track record of producing well.

I kind of have the feeling this is an attempt to gain the capital to do fun things like -bals and sours and small batch niche beers and not paying back their own investment to start those things.Pay this year for better things next year.

If they have tricks up their sleeves that would sweeten the pot of membership and they want you to sign up for the whole year for ~$600, I think they're on the foolish side for not having a better public road map than "Special Releases" and "This month the reserve members got:" type posts.

Everyone knows if they had a Double Barrel Dirty Deeds (I am the worst) in a backroom hiding out right now and just mentioned it on the reserve club somewhere that it would get more people more curious. It's too big of an investment for me without better communication from the brewery about what I'm getting in return.

$15 once got me into a secret society at Brooklyn Brewery. With that one time $15 I am invited to every single Brewmaster's Reserve beer release which is about 4 times a year and each party is open bar for like 3 hours of the Brewmaster beer and whatever else is on tap at the brewery and some light snacks. I also have an invite and a +1 to every Worshipful Company of Brewers beer release. That's the brewing staff each making a beer and at the end one of them will collaborate with Garrett Oliver on a Brewmaster's beer. I also can get into the Brewery an hour earlier on Fridays which I maybe used once in over 2 years. Also we have one meeting a month with guest speakers and beer is included in that. Got a sweet dimple mug with our logo too. At our christmas party there was a cask of 2008 Black Ops on. 2 hours open bar of that and Blast and I was done. Think I had 4 12oz pours of the Black Ops cask. All of that cost me $15 over 2 years ago.

Major problem is its a big investment in a single brewery with not a track record for limited releases. There are a lot of new breweries opening on LI. I like the initiative but like joe fuzz said you pretty much have to trust that they will come through. Who knows maybe they will. The only brewery that I would take that chance on right now is Barrier. But not for $600, half that maybe.

It doesn't matter how young or old your brewery is. To charge $50 a month is moronic. Charge less, offer better discounts. Although with the high content of beer douches on LI, it may work. I do agree with this point though "I think the reserve society would see much greater membership from a tier system that let's you choose the level of investment for different benefits"

    Agreed, some of these breweries
Do they still do the reserve society?

I would def do a Barrier membership, but they are very close to my house and I love/like most of their stuff

As for the GSB one, I think it seems worth if you are local enough to them to enjoy the discounts at the tap and the free pint, especially if you were going to buy the bottles anyway. From a buddy who is a member, you can cancel your membership at any time it is not yearly at a time...

Great to see Rick chime in here. How many breweries will offer to let you see the brewing process and help them prep the bottles for sale in exchange for said beers? Kind of cool. Glad that he has made himself available to answer anyone's questions- real stand up guy! Kudos!

GSB has some unique flavors. As a homebrewer, I wish the beer was not ultra filtered. Then again, they are serving the masses. As for the beer club it is a great idea if you drink a lot of their beer. Rick and crew have done a great job!

i'd love to help out in bottling (as long as i can bring brews to share with everyone)! just let me know...and if i can do it i'm in - srs, really excited about what you guys are doing and would love to see more of it.

my $0.02 on the whole reserve/GSB thing - i agree mostly with what joe fuzz said. it is really exciting to see a brewery on LI doing anything interesting aside from making a beer that is slightly tastier than mediocre. i'm still waiting for that day that we produce a heady topper or other amazing go to everyday beer, but GSB is doing a great job of steadily growing and steadily putting out new and interesting...and more importantly, tasty beer.

while i feel that the $600 price tag and $50/month commitment is a bit much to ask, the first month was definitely worth it if you are a fan of their beer and plan to buy bottles. i've spoken with some guys at the brewery and they assured me that they intend to make it worth the while for members. at this point, the membership isn't enough that they can do exclusives...but the day might come when they do a run of 50 t-shirts or glasses or whatnot that are strictly member only. realistically, if they brew a beer and don't have members to cover the bottle count, they still need to sell that beer so at the onset i wouldn't expect too much member only exclusives aside from getting great value for your money (ie...$60 of beer for the monthly $50 with other perks for the local who can hang at the brewery). i'd do the membership (lord knows it would've paid off to buy 2 memberships instead of the bottles of dirty deeds and devil's deeds that i got), but with 2 little kids, it is hard to commit $50 a month for a year to anything, especially if the perks involve going to the brewery (i go as often as i can, but again, 2 little kids at home makes going out for dinner a challenge, let alone hanging at a brewery), but i'm happy to support a local brewery that is making good beer.

bottom line, GSB is making beer that LI can be proud of...and they are only getting more experimental and producing new and better beers. anyone who raves about SH IRS and then puts down Dirty Deeds is likely not talking with their taste buds (and i challenge them to do a blind taste test with the 2 beers and some friends and see what comes out on the top as a group consensus). it is a shame that we live in a world where opinions are formulated from anything other than experience, but that's the truth...and it is only amplified on forums like this. if you don't believe me, seek out trade posts on Red Peak.

I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of the people who come on the forum to spout that this brewery is the best or worst on LI has only tried one or two beers from the brewery. this whole thing is just a hype machine anyway and we all have our favs and not so favs. go out there and speak with your $'s - you think $15 is too much for dirty deeds, then don't buy it...but look at your trading bill and see how you spend $25 on shipping to trade for some less than mediocre $15 beer produced in middle america. is dirty deeds the next big thing? probably not...will BA dirty deeds be the next big thing? we'll have to wait and see. to complain about a $15 price tag on a brewery only released beer in today's day in age is almost as silly as complaining about a 6 pack costing more than $10. these are the times we live in. $15 for a brewery only released beer is par for the course if not on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

    He hath spoken, peasants!

Seriously though, E puts this in perfect perspective... re: other brewery releases from a no name brewery in middle America. Support these guys... and we'll get our BA Dirty Deeds! And you know what? If you haven't had Marauder, then you don't know what you've missed. I will GLADLY pay $20 a bottle for that stuff when they make it. One of the best beers made by a LI brewery, ever. Only thing I've had that I'd rate higher is a bunch of SH whales....

Marauder....droool. I have already said too much. Marauder is garbage and not worth the cap on the bottle, save your cash LIers, i will ensure any and all marauder is.properly disposed of.

Sorry for the digression, lets get back to whining. So how bout big z, what the hell happened there?

I think $15 is a fair price for a 22oz bomber of a 10% abv RIS. You won't find any other kind of RIS this cheap at a beer store. I don't think they're hitting anyone over the head as far as price goes selling it at the brewery.
