    Hi there, German folks!

I'm curious as to whether or not Schlenkerla's Fastenbier is available only in Germany? I can't seem to really find any information about this beer... So it's possible that it was never even bottled. Figured this would be the best place to ask for more info.

I love smoked beers & Schlenkerla makes some of the best in the world. So I'd like to try this brew one day... Unfortunately a trip to Germany isn't in the stars at this moment in time, so I'm hoping it might be acquired in some other way.

    Thanks!

It appears from time to time on draft in the U.S. (no bottles). You may try e-mailing Schlenkerla. I know that Matthias Trum, the owner/brewmaster, answers most of the emails himself, and he may be able to steer you in the direction of information about where/when these are distributed.

I've had it a few times in Amsterdam, Bayerischer Anstich. It's a cracking beer, one of their best.

Thanks, guys. Looking forward to tracking this down, one way or another. I know Scott will tell me the only real way to enjoy it is to hop on a plane to Bamberg, but in the meantime.... ;o)

Assuming you're not just out to "tick" it and instead want to have a few in one sitting, by the time you get your tab you may have spent as much as a flight ticket to Germany. Last time I saw it on tap around here it was $10 a pint. Ouch!

Hah, no no. While I always enjoy trying new things, I never consider myself a "ticker" & try to justify that fact by carefully reviewing each & every beer I try (used to review on this site, have recently moved over to another).

Smoked beers are just one of the latest styles for me to come around to. I've always loved Schlenkerla's offerings... the Marzen, Urbock, Eiche, & especially the Helles. I remember cracking open the Urbock for the first time, I was amazed at how much it resembled perfectly cooked sausage in beer form...

Now I've got a fridge/bar that's almost always stocked with bottles of the Helles, & recently I've been seeking out more smoked beers, as I'm really starting to fall in love with this style. Mikkeller's Beer Geek Bacon was another one that I thought was very good... And actually, Founders' recently released Smoked Porter really took me back... Great interpretation of the style, in my (limited) opinion.

Anyway, all bumbling aside, it's obvious that Schlenkerla knows what they're doing when it comes to smoky beers & hearing about this Fastenbier really caught my intrigue.

Keep your eye out for it at some of the MI multitaps around Lent. Friends say they have had it in MI. I had it in Bamberg.

I may have to take a detour over to Bamberg since I'll be near Frankfurt this week.

Klosterbräu Maibock <drools incontrollably>. My favourite pale Bock. What a pairing those two beers make. If that's all they served in heaven, I wouldn't complain.

In his defense, Bamberg and Frankfurt are in the opposite directions from Stuttgart. Plus, is the Fastenbier even out yet? I have research to do. And possibly cars to rent.

Nice thing about living in Germany - I can get Schlenkerla at my local getränkemarkt (sans Fastenbier tho).

If that's the same place where you (recently???) got the green bottle of HB Oktoberfest, I'd check the dates! :grinning:

You definitely need to get to Bamberg. Lots more to see...including the worlds of difference between bottled Schlenkerla and Schlenkerla served by gravity from the wooden keg. And that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the paradise that is Bamberg and Oberfranken...

Nein - that's a tourist bottle that was left over from a party last summer. Goes better with doners than a Mezzo Mix.

And I think the Maibock isn't out until April 1st. I mean, it's never a bad time to go to Bamberg, but hang on for a few weeks!

OK, I was starting to worry for you. (a) HB Oktoberfest is in brown bottles here, and (b) said bottles are long gone at this point in the year.

It's some generic HB - probably the same stuff sold at the half dozen of Hofbrau's US locations.
