Seems like I have suddenly noticed a significant uptick in the number of ISO's for this. This has been a top favorite of mine ever since I first tried it (I think I say this about every beer on which I comment), but it has been around for awhile. Possibilities:

    - Did it win something at World Beer Cup? (kinda like BA Abominable)
    - Was there a recent "What is the value?" thread
    - Is there some big tasting happening, and multiple folks are trying to acquire for such?
    - Was it re-released?

Really, just curious, but obviously hoping for option 4. Anyone have insight?

i dont think it was well publicized last year when it was released. if i remember right, it was suppose to be brewery only but hit shelves anyway. overshadowed by other releases and $20 for a bottle alot of people let it sit. and now with the barrel aged boris gaining in popularity ( along with the barrel aged craze in general) people are starting to kick them selves in the ass for not buying it. funny how we let $20 beers sit on shelves, but we snatch them up like crazy when they are brewery only.

Option 5 - It's delicious, but it took people a while to figure it out.

This is the same option I use to describe what happened to Bourbon County and Cantillon, both of which sat on shelves for years.

kinda funny...i saw this on shelves in boston for like $26 a while back and passed it up, but just traded for one a couple weeks ago. there's a lot of highly rated BA barleywines out there right now (KH, blighs, abacus, kuhnhenn, CW, etc) so maybe it's just the style in general picking up speed.

had my only bottle last night. good stuff. i wouldn't trade anything big for it, but if someone wanted to go $4$ on locals i would jump on it.

All it takes is one ISO to get the collective BA hive-mind buzzing. I would seriously like to try this brew though...I've had it on my wants but haven't actively sought it out.

It's had a good reputation as a top BA BW for a while, and as nick said the style is definitely getting popular now for traders.

Not that I think it has anything to do with a recent increase in BA Naked Evil's popularity, but Hoppin' Frog just took gold this year in the World Beer Cup with their BA Boris (category 58 - Wood- and Barrel-Aged Strong Stout).

It's delicious and people are starting to notice. This happens all the time. I think people shyed away at first because of the price tag but now that the ratings have been building they're more likely to spend the $25 it takes to get it.

I have 2 in my cellar now, but once they're gone, I'd very easily go over $4$ to trade for it again. I initially though it a bit pricey at $25, but I've spent as much on other barrel-aged brews I liked a lot less (cough <<black betty>>)

They all suck, don't waste your money, leave them on the shelves.

Yea I opened a bottle of BA Naked Evil the other night because of all the hype I keep hearing about it, but to tell you the truth, I didnt think it was all that special. Much better BA Barleywines out there. But to each their own...

The buzz may have been kicked up because they just sold the last bottle at the brewery two weeks ago. No current plans to make anymore.

Yeah, definitely not in the KH/MoaS/Abacus tier of barley wines.

They were pouring Silk Porter and BA Boris through a coffee filled randal last night at the Cleveland International Beer Fest. That was great.

In our blind tasting, it came in 4th behind King Henry, Blighs and 09 Great and came in ahead of MoaS, Abacus, Kuhnennen (sp?)and 09 Twisted Jim. I thought it was delicious.

no idea why it's suddenly more in demand if it is.

however, i think it's a sort of a polarizing beer. not as much as say, VE10.10.10 which some people loved, and a lot of people utterly hated (i loved it). but i think some people take BA NE and say "pretty good BA barleywine, not great," while others (me) would put it up there with abacus.

obviously it's all subjective, but i think i've noticed a trend of "meh" or "holy shit it's the best," with this one more than others (e.g. abacus, where you either say it's great [most people], or you shit on it like "it's not Up To The Hype" or whatever).
