word on the street is Pipeworks Amarillo will fall somewhere between Square Grouper and Citra... since it hit our bright tank on Monday, we've easily crushed a couple 1/6ths just between our staff... we're excited to share this one! and we learned a little something from it that should help our other single hop focused IIPA's.

also, have some bad news to pass along...

one of the most fun (stupid) things about the brewing industry is the way hops are referred to... some people when talking about their hops are talking about the crop year (the year in which they are picked) and some people refer to the brew year (the year that the hops are intended to be used). Because our North American harvest is late in the year (crop year), by the time they are packaged and ready to be shipped it is the next year when they are available (brew year). Anywho! we were mislead thinking we made an awesome score of 2014 brew year mosaic... when in fact it was 2014 crop year hops (which makes sense because we were pinching ourselves when they told us 2014 brew year!), meaning we have 0 mosaic until 2015... to make matters worse we got shut out in 2015 for citra (and nelson! and galaxy... we're working it, we'll find some...). So Square Group doesn't look like it's happening again... unless we can score what we need... which we thought we did! Luckily for 2015 we have tons of Amarillo, Simcoe, Mosaic to play with... so that's cool. And this year we just scored some Amarillo as well as a good amount of Citra.

Sounds like I'm going to buy more than two bombers of the next batch(s) of Pipeworks Citra before the Great Pipeworks Citra Drought of 2015 LOL

Can I make it on the sloppy seconds list if I help lead the charge in pillaging other breweries for their hops?

I'm sitting on all the Abductions I have in order to do this. I was going to do this with the ninja ones even though I know they should be enjoyed fresh, but I my willpower wasn't that strong. So I am actually looking forward to the podcast. I'm listening to Episode 1 right now and it's cool so far.

I think we should all start growing hop gardens in our backyards. Maybe we could co-op some of the rooftop gardens Mayor Daley would never stop talking about.

I've picked and used hops from chicago backyards several times. Cascade and Chinook seemed to do well. they also make an excellent privacy screen with their big leaves.

    February 21, 2014 Update

Pipeworks Amarillo and Blood of the Unicorn face-off, but hopefully no Blood will be spilled.

    Blood of the Unicorn
One of our original hop beasts of burden makes its whimsically triumphant return. Blood of the Unicorn is Pipeworks Ninja vs Unicorn's hot redheaded sister. Loaded with fruity and piney American hops this rouge equine always delivers. $9.99, 22oz, 8.5% ABV

    Pipeworks Amarillo
This IIPA, the latest addition in our hop-highlighting NvU Epic Battle series, has a bright, fresh hop aroma, and a subtle bitterness, that has us all talking about how crushable this is. (DISCLAIMER: Please do not actually crush beer while still in bottle and cap is still on. It will hurt…not that we know) Drink early, drink often. $10.99, 22oz, 9.5% ABV

    On the Brewing Horizon:
Coffee Break Abduction - Imperial Stout brewed with coffee and vanilla
Pipeworks Ninja Vs Unicorn - Hopped-up Double IPA
Catch of a Lifetime - New, delightfully dry saison brewed with Meyer lemon and camomile

Dudes - just downed a batch #52 Last Kiss. Holy frick it was smooth and rich. My first try at it so can't compare to fresh off the bottling line but it was excellent. And this was after FW Sucaba. Call me crazy but it kicked Sucaba's tail.

So what defines a hop focused beer for pipeworks? 100% dry hop?
