I lived in Chicago two summers ago, and most of what I drank was these really "juicy" pale ales--Zombie Dust, Alpha King, and Daisy Cutter. None are available in Pennsylvania, where I've lived most of my life, nor do they seem to be California, where I live now. Is there anything similar that's available in the Bay Area? It doesn't need to be local, just available. Just about every brewer makes a pale ale, but perusing the BA top list for APAs it looks like the best ones are mostly concentrated near Chicago and Vermont, and not widely available.
Have you had fresh Sculpin? I'm also a huge fan of ZD and I've always thought Sculpin (although with some differing flavor profiles) is in that same refreshing, "juicy", "bursting with flavor" category. I know that Sculpin is an IPA, not an APA. But I can't tell any difference between the body, type, or style between ZD and Sculpin. I actually think there are a lot of examples, but Sculpin is readily available and immediately comes to mind.
yes, actually Sculpin is what I usually get for my "juiciness" fix, and yeah I guess it's pretty much just semantics separating it from the beers I mentioned. I'd gladly take other recommendations though.
Not real easy to get unless you're in San Diego, but I'd put Alpine's Duet in that category as well. It's actually a little fruitier and more floral than Sculpin, which could be better or worse depending on preference.
Drake's 1500, FW Pale 31. lil' sumpin' sumpin' and Fortunate Islands if you don't mind a bit of wheat in your PaleAle.
RR Row 2/Hill 56 and Happy Hops Faction Pale Ale Lagunitas New Dogtown Marin 3 Flowers Cellarmaker Dobis Altamont Left Coast
I haven't had it in roughly 2 years, but Lagunitas DayTime was one of the most juiciest pale ales i ever had.
