Haven't had Boneyard yet, but I can see Simtra finished second. Fantastic beer by a really underrated brewery.

I guess, there are some quality control issues. I tried it once and it was pretty bad too. Not surprised at all.

I think it's waaay to many beers to do in a taste test. I think it's been said already that the flavors play off of one another differently. For example, I love Dogfish Palo Santo. I've had it numerous times. I bought six different beers for my buddy and I to try that I felt were in the same flavor class (that's 6 ounces of each a piece). By the time I got to the Palo Santo it was so overwhelmingly sweet it was about undrinkable.

I recall another time when I started getting into craft beer that I told the same buddy about two beers...Old Rasputin and Brooklyn Brewery Black Chocolate Stout. I told how awesome they were! Raspy is always awesome, but after an Old Raspy, the Brooklyn Stout(which I liked) with it's high ABV tasted like gasoline.

That is all true. The strongest example for me was the recent tasting of Pliny the Younger which was followed by Blind Pig. The latter tasted like sierra nevada pale ale at best... And you know, it's not that it's a bland, flat beer. But I think most of us understand those things when doing multiple beer tastings

Thank you for putting sculpin almost dead last. I have had that garbage fresh in bottles and on tap.. I have NO IDEA why people put it up so high. Havent had all the ones on your list but sucks is delicious.
I totally agree with that ranking

There's nothing wrong with Sculpin at all except the price and Sucks never lets you down , but I can't say much here in Atlanta can't find Boneyard or Union Jack.

Cool idea, but echoing a few thoughts from above (not sure I necessarily have solutions, either):

    - Eight is a lot, and tasting order likely plays a major factor
    - For control purposes, the growler beer seems like it has a built-in advantage (and that finished tops)
    - Did you do any palate cleansing between tastings?
    - How many ounces did each tasting consist of?

If I were to OP, I'd probably give up on this thread and not answer anymore, because most people already have their "favorite" in their heads of what these gentlemen sampled, and disagree with the whole "tasting". Arguing and matter of facting why they are right blah blah blah, it's old and stale, like Dirt Wolf!!!!
They came to their independent conclusions based on their preferential tastes. Nobody will change their minds by saying "their favorite" is better and they disagree with their conclusions.
We drink what we prefer or afford. Like Hillary says, "What difference does it make?!??!?"

A few friends and I have been planning an IPA tasting; probably DIPAs only, or perhaps IPAs only, but likely not both. Probably fewer beers, too, given what these beers can do to your palate.

That said, I love your lineup, and I'm not shocked at your rankings. I'll jump on the DirtWolf bandwagon, though, and state that your experiences do not check with mine. Nor does Sucks, for that matter; for me, Sucks is in the second tier of DIPAs, right behind the PtE/HT tier (probably the same tier as DirtWolf), which is a huge difference from single IPAs like Sculpin.

Very cool results, though; thanks for sharing!

I appreciate your thoughts and had the same ones. Eight is a lot, but we had them so we drank them. I thought tasting order would have played a major factor too, but sculpin was the 1st one drank and came in 7th. Boneyard was the 6th one drank and came in first. So I couldn't draw any logical relationship between tasting order and preference.

I also thought the growler would make a bit of a difference - and it could have given the rankings. But the use of a growler can only pose the possibility that their is an advantage, not that their was definitely an advantage. I guess a better clarification would be I prefer "Boneyard in a growler over these 7 beers in bottles." That is more accurately stated. Unfortunately boneyard is only a draft brewery so I can't get them any other way.

We drank water between each glass, but probably would have preferred something like sparkling water- or even better, brushing our teeth between each one - that seems a little ridiculous though.

We drank about 2 ounces of each. There were about 4 to 6 ounces poured in each glass but didn't drink the whole thing. It was probably 1 to 2 sips and then we moved on.

I will answer you. No, not on person changed my mind about dirt wolf. Not one person changed my mind about sculpin.

I just encourage others on this forum to do a blind taste testing. I think it is so fascinating and a lot of fun. If people are willing to let go control of their homerisms and place stock in their taste buds then it would be a much more civil discussion on BA.

People just are more satisfied with making ignorant one liners in hopes that they will get "likes" on their post so that they will feel good about themselves. I'm not sure what you can exchange these "likes" for. Is there a bar somewhere on the east coast that takes BA likes as payment? I hope so.

So I say unless you had the beer I had on that day, you don't know what your talking about. Everyone should do a blind taste testing and post their results.

Well, everyone's tastes are their own so... to each their own regarding rankings.

I haven't had all of those, but most of them. I will say that ranking Sucks and Sculpin that low is very surprising... especially Sucks. Let me emphasize surprising.

Honestly I don't see the big deal with Sculpin being near the end of the bunch. I've had it numerous times and find it to be just ok. Definitely doesn't live up to the hype for me especially at 16 bucks a sixer.

Great idea on the blindly tasting, I've been wanting to do this for awhile!

I wonder if the results would change if you were to do another tasting of the same lineup in a randomly different order. You could order this lineup in 64 different ways.
