I'm speculating here, but: If the harvest was in March and April, we should start seeing pellets in June or July -- right? Anyone have any specifics?

From what I have seen, most sites that list it as unavailable say fall of this year.

The European hops came in around Christmas to January. They harvest the same time as the US - late August to early Oct. I would expect the one from the Southern Hemisphere to come in around Sept. assuming a March harvest and 5 months shipping and customs.

I have 7 or 8 ozs left from the 2011 crop that I'd be willing to trade if you're interested. I wasn't fond of it. Message me if you're interested.

Nelson Sauvin is a love/hate hop. I am not at all fond of it. A good friend is. If you like it, you like it and that is what matters.

    Jeff,

This past weekend I was at a local Brewpub and I saw that they have a Nelson Sauvin IPA in the fermenter. I had a conversation with the brewer (I have gotten to know him real well; I have been trying to entice him to brew a CAP). Anyhow, I asked him if he had ever tasted a beer brewed with Nelson Sauvin before and he said no. I mentioned that I had it only once (Sixpoint Spice of Life – Nelson Sauvin) and it was an unpleasant experience. I told him I will try his Nelson Sauvin in a very small glass when his beer is ready.

    Cheers!

    Jack

Me too! Though I would love to try Alpine's Nelson before I give up.

That's one decision you won't regret. It very well could reverse your feelings towards the hop. They did an excellent job with it.

This was my first experience with that hop. Alpine's Nelson is highly rated. It was not for me. I get a taste that reminds me of a white wine made with Catawbe or Concord grapes, which I do not like. A good friend sitting beside me loved it. One should try an Alpine Nelson and form their own opinion based on their taste.

My wife does not like Simcoe, as she gets a strong cat pee aroma from that hop. You can guess who cleans the cat box in our house.

Frankly if no one has it, and your only other option is trading for some, just pay the $3.50/oz. It's not cheap, but it's not mind-blowingly off the charts either considering how rare/short supply the hop seems to be.

Probably because many people hate it, and it's a more 'polarizing' hop than most others. Personally, I have had exactly one (AFAIK) IPA made with this hop. It wasn't very good. But I do look forward to stumbling upon another sometime, to see if it was the ingredient or the execution.

Yeah -- Don't judge it based on one commercial example. I have a half-full growler in the fridge of an Amber made with Apollo hops only, from a local brewery I really like. It's mostly shitty... Fortunately, it's not my only experience with that hop; otherwise, I might have a bad impression of it.

I think that Alpine Beer Co.'s Nelson is a truly great beer. Changed my life. However, I'm sure that there are several other hops besides Nelson Sauvin that go into that recipe. Anchor's "Humming Ale" is a more subtly hopped commercial example that only uses Nelson.

BTW sargeantstogie's is a good link. Seems that Brew Brothers has Nelson at $3.00 for 2 oz.'s

Nelson Sauvin hops are the only hops mentioned in Alpine’s description of Alpine Nelson:

    “A Golden Rye IPA

An outstanding hop from New Zealand, Nelson Sauvin, is generously used throughout the brewing and dry-hopping of this unique beer. European rye is added for a smooth, malty addition to flavor. 1.065 OG 7%ABV”

    Cheers!

Someone on HBT mentioned that they got the Nelson recipe from Pat (Alpine's Headbrewer/Owner), which in itself seems fishy to me since he keeps his recipes very close, and that it included other New Zealand hops (Moteuka I think), which seems even fishier to me.

Alpine Nelson tastes and smells like a fresh bag of Nelson Sauvin hops, which to me, is delicious. All the other Nelson beers I've had have been very lackluster, other than my homebrews of course :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Brew Brothers link, I ordered a bunch of Galaxy and Nelson from them, and they were great quality hops from a nice, reliable group of people.
