I have yet to have any infected bottles of the coffee and the barley wine is outstanding!!! Maybe its an out of state issue. Save the good stuff for WI peeps and send the "infected" across the borders :wink :wink

After problems the last two years with a half a case or so purchased here in IL each year, I only purchased a pair of 4 packs at the 16 party. so far I've had two bottles, and gave one to a friend -- none were infected. But none have been drank in the last two weeks. Gonna try one this weekend and see where I'm at.

I bought a single today in Madison . It was off to say the least. Its interesting that its always PM. I have cases of BBBW from past years with no issue. Infected coffee perhaps?

Hmmmm, people have been buying cases of this stuff. I'll try one tomorrow and get back to you guys, I had one a week ago and it seemed delicious.

I said this earlier "Drink those delicious coffee stouts fresh and when the carbonation gets high, drink them all. Good to go. If they get drank the infection can't take hold." I don't remember the previous batches, the infected ones, being bad off the bat, maybe my memory is failing me. They seem to have been good, then developed the twang, then high carbonation, yada, yada, before becoming an undrinkable mess. But it took time. Is this new batch noticeably bad already? Or a portion of it at least?

I drink Central Waters fairly often but I don't think I have ever looked for a batch or bottle date. Does Central Waters specifically bottle date, besides the yearly dates on the barrel aged stuff?

The bourbon cherry stout from a few years back was infected too. I attributed that to the fruit but with Peruvian Morning being sour for at least two years now, possibly three, is it a barrel problem? Which I can't figure because the bourbon barleywine, stout, and scotch have all been money lately. Is it a coffee bean problem? Do they add coffee beans to the barrel or is it actual pressed coffee? If it's added beans to an already fermented out beer, maybe that's the deal. I don't know.

What I do know is when Peruvian Morning is done properly it's one of the best beers on the planet. Truth.

Anyone hear from CW about what they're going to do with the PM that people have already bought up but didn't drink? I'm guessing we're shit out of luck?

I guess I've been lucky, the 4-pack I purchased last night was just fine, and damn delicious! Never purchased any bad 2013 either. I did get some bad 2012's though, and they tasted bad right off the shelf. That said, I purchase the beer freshly released, and drink it right away, never had any last through a weekend.

I could see this delayed infection being bad for hoarders that buy by the case.

I wasn't going to name "my source" because I am not one to call out places but it was the beer buyer for that store. I think he knows way more about it than most of us.

This is the coffee that they use (link). I would think it has to do with the coffee, since they barrel age so many other beers that have not had this issue. The 2 bottles I already drank were quite good, so I'll finish up the other 5 I have in the next two weeks. I also sent some off, so I will tell them to drink now.

Just because you were able to get it doesn't mean a store didn't get the text to pull it off the shelves, or maybe just ignored it. Not sure what that store's situation is but if the quality of a beer is compromised, and it comes down from the brewery to pull it, I'm not risking selling bad beer to my customers. I've had both the bottle and draft version this year and there was definitely something off about the bottled version.

Had one the other night courtesy of @atone315. It was divine! No infection whatsoever. Thanks again Nick!

If I were CW I would probably scrap Peruvian Morning (or limit it to just kegs), since it seems to be cursed. If this has happened for 3 straight years, it probably won't be any different for another three. I'm sure the brewery has taken every precaution imaginable and yet the problem persists. I'd call that a curse, probably from Peruvian Voodoo.

The odd thing is, I have never had a bad bottle. I buy it as soon as it hits, and drink it within weeks.

Yep. Carbonation seemed fine, but there was absolutely something off. I got very little coffee and a good bit of fruit tartness. For the record, I have never had infected Peruvian Morning before, not in the past 2 years until last night. I have enjoyed Peruvian Morning many times in the past and would like to think I know it well- and the bottle I had last night was a shadow of what it should be.

Probably SOL, or at the very least we wouldn't hear anything concrete from CW for a long long time.

@Stevedore I noticed the coffee and bourbon to be quite subtle this year. It doesn't seem off to me, but I remember more coffee in the past. I get more of a dark chocolate stout this year, which is quite good. I guess I got lucky with the half case I bought.

Yeah, if there is something to this, it will likely be a slow process where they're testing it out on their end, figuring out the extent of any infection, etc. It takes awhile, but if they do see a problem, I would imagine they'll make good on it - I got reimbursed for a case last year.

I really hope it's something isolated. Would be awful to have a third year like this. Such a nice brew, and one of the best values out there.

@Ri0 Entirely possible, even likely, that there is bottle variation just based on reading this thread. Non-scientific, I know.

painstakingly slow reimbursement process. But definitely class act move.

not just tart. the last time i opened a 2013 peruvian morning, maybe a couple months ago, it was disgusting garbage water. not hyperbole. i've had infected PM that i thought "well this is infected, but it's an interesting tartness that isn't entirely awful" but this bottle smelled and tasted like garbage water. ugh.
