So last year was really my first full year into craft beer. I didn't know what KBS was until 1 bottle was shared with me in a funny turn of events in the summer last year.

The question is whether KBS is reasonably attainable. I have to admit I'm slowly losing interest in beers and breweries that have releases leaving the majority empty handed.

It releases on April 1st, when would it start popping up in NJ lets say? Chime in with stories and advice for a successful hunt.

I wouldn't expect it to sit on shelves for very long, regardless of where you live. I had a hard time getting any last year (I managed one bottle, and at a higher price than I would have liked to pay), but maybe it's a bit different in NJ.

If you definitely want to get some, I suggest finding a local place that is selling it, and wait in line (assuming there is one) before the store opens.

Wegmans got in a pretty substantial shipment last year. Not sure if that will be the case this year but it's definatly where I plan to start. $20 for a four pack can't be beat either.

Unfortunately, if you have not made arrangements already, it will be hard to come by. I am not the best at planning - so I do not plan on getting much if any at all this year. There is always trading.

I agree with this, especially given that there are so many easy-to-get bourbon barrel aged beers these days. KBS might be one of the best, but its hard to feel like I'm missing out. By April I've had my fill of bourbon stouts. If I see some I will definitely buy it, but I won't stress out trying to get it.

In my area KBS is one of the hardest to obtain limited releases. You either have truck chase or be in the right place at the right time which will reward you with a 1 bottle limit at most places. Two years ago I went to 5 different beer stores and ended up with 2 bottles. The places that already sold out had it for under an hour. My brother and I really enjoyed those 2 beers but won't be doing that again.

With limited releases like this you need an in. A co-worker's husband has become friends with a local Bottle Shop owner and has 12 bottles on reserve once it comes in. Some may say this is an uncool move but sometimes it has to be done.

I buy founders porter more than anything and drink the rest of their line up often...my local knows this and I am rewarded w/ a 4pak for my loyalty...after that I have to stumble upon a bottle w/ some serious effort

What does "our area" constitute? It seems like a more specific thread title would be more helpful.

Does this ever pop up around DC upon release?

Where the hell was that kind of pricing when I lived in PA? I never found KBS at any of the Wegmans I visited, and the rest of their beers were way above what I'd ever seen them at in other areas.

I've got my fingers crossed that I can actually buy a four pack this year and save them for a once-a-year beer for the next few years. I'm not counting on it though, as I'm not driving all over town or waiting in line for anything, and I don't buy enough beer to be considered a "regular" anywhere.

Trust me I was shocked to find it in PA. It was one of those there for a hour and then gone for the year situation. May have been $25 for a 4 pack (my memory isn't always the sharpest) but it def wasn't anymore than that. Wegman's is not cheap but it's cheaper then most places in the area.

I was pretty sure I mentioned NJ specifically in my first post. I'm also pretty sure I welcomed all stories and experiences.

It seems I may have an in through my brother. I'm not holding my breath though from what I'm hearing. It kind of pisses me off that a brewery like founders can't meet demand on this, it makes me want to pull back on them as an option I go to. There are tons of other beers out there. These situations are souring.

It would probably be more helpful to people to put specific location, if you have one, in the thread title. That way you can quickly glance at this page http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/forums/us-mid-atlantic.10/ and see which thread pertains to your area. Maybe that's just me though.

Founders puts KBS on the same release level(Limited) as Back Woods Bastard (per their website). I saw a lot of BWB this year. One could reason there might be a lot of KBS this year although the demand and hype around KBS much greater.

I saw a lot of backwoods too. This would be nice.

There's a lot more hype and demand for bourbon aged stouts than there are for bourbon aged scotch ales. Hence, Bastard is much easier to get than KBS imo.

I saw a decent amount of BWB too, and it wasn't selling out immediately either. I don't think the hype is nearly as high for BWB as it is for KBS though, so that might explain it.
