Nelson Sauvin
A new variety developed in Nelson, New Zealand. Named with more than a nod towards the Sauvignon blanc grape. Intensely fruity flavour and aroma with a strong suggestion of passionfruit. Effective for bittering, flavour and aroma. Good when used either solely or in combination with complementary fruity hops such as Cascade in American pale ales.

Amarillo
Popular American mid-range alpha acid variety with a unique and distinct aroma discovered growing "wild" (spontaneously) in one of their hop yards and developed by Virgil Gamache Farms in late 20th century. Also known as VGX001, its strain number. It is registered Brand VGXP01 cv.

Citra
Citra Brand is a registered trademark used with HBC 394 cv special aroma hop variety developed by the Hop Breeding Company (a joint venture between John I. Haas, Inc. and Select Botanicals Group, LLC). It was released in 2007. Citra Brand hops have fairly high alpha acids and total oil contents with a low percentage of cohumulone content. Citra Brand hops imparts interesting citrus and tropical fruit characters to beer.

I had a feeling going in yesterday that Amarillo was going to be different than Citra and Nelson.
The nose was off for me. First taste was a mild ipa. It got better as it warmed up. But still nothing like the previous 2 Shower releases. Amarillo is my least favorite so far. Two bottles is good enough for me. I think Mosaic and Simcoe will be a better release than Amarillo. Amarillo has a milder alpha acid than the other two. I think we will see the bottles lasting longer this month. It's not a bad dipa. Just different. Those who prefer the Amarillo over Citra and Nelson should like this one better.

 

I thought Tropic Thunder was the best part of the whole night... Forgot how funny that movie is.

 

For all those who got Amalgamator from Beachwood, how does this stack up?

Amalgamator is far superior to Amarillo Showers.

 

No comparison. Both totally different made beers. But Amalgamator destroys Amarillo.

 

Anyone finding this (Amarillo Showers) on shelves anywhere?

 

I heard Whole Foods in Tustin got a case yesterday. Not sure if there are any left though.

 

Damn it. I was excited to drink my bottle tonight. No longer.

I think their Big Whig IPA is good for a yearly release. A lot better than their original IPA years ago. Did you get to try their Tongue Tickles? Nobility? Naughty Sauce & Bean Bump? Royalty? Or Messenger(a few lucky ones who got to try this)? All great. The Ghost of Jacob Barley was also good. I wouldn't say Amarillo Showers is bad. It's good. But not up to par as Citra and Nelson showers. Again, different hops. Different taste and aroma.

 

You should try Societe's current batch of the Bachelor, it is Amarillo hopped. Not sure how long they will have it as that beer like the showers beers changes every time but it is very good.

I hope the rest of the year is paced a bit better. Citra and then Nelson wasn't an ideal 1-2 combo. If they had went Citra, Amarillo, Nelson I think it would have been better.

 

are they releasing anything else in the showers series? does anybody know if tongue tickles will be released again?

 

Don't know about Tongue Tickles but yes there will be more "Showers" beers. Not sure how many more they'll do but I know Mosaic will be one of them.
