Unlike the US, Germany - or at least my neck of the woods - has had a very mild winter. Heidelberg got a little snow around Thanksgiving and I think that was about it. Looking forward to nice weather and cheap beer when I return!

I have a big soft spot for Rothaus Pils, because on my only visit to Germany I arrived tired and dehydrated after a long day of travelling and that was the beer I drank to revive myself. Tasted like the drink of the gods at that particular moment!

Hallerndorfer Keller (am Kreuzberg) between Bamberg and Forchheim. The pic is the Brauhaus am Kreuzberg -- picturesque, but not great beer by any stretch (it's a new, "microbrewery" doing experimental stuff). Attached to it are 2 other Kellers: Lieberth and Rittmayer...both very good. Ron Pattinson did a great write-up of the place here: http://barclayperkins.blogspot.com/2011/07/franconia-june-2011-part-two.html

Hallerndorfer Rauchbier by Brauerei Rittmayer won the Gold Award at the European Beer Star in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Since then their label for that beer looks like this. I wonder what happened in the last five years. Did they not enter the competition anymore, did the beer get worse, more critical jurors, better competitors?
It's a very good Rauchbier overall. Very strong smoked aromas, you get the typical bacon/ham-aromas that you either love or hate. Although the smoked malts come out very strongly, overall it's rather smooth, even a little bit sweet. It's a good in-between -- not as strong and heavy as the Rauchbiers by Schlenkerla and not quite as subtle as those by Spezial. The smoky sweetness reminds me more of a whisky-cola than Schinken.

    Nate ---

You did see the review of this beer from boddhitree, Dec 19, 2012?

I still feel the same about Rauchbier as when I wrote this review 15 months ago. Through Pax Bräu, I've learned that a judicious use of Rauchmalz can add a wonderful kick or counterpoint to the sweet caramel flavors of Pils or Münchnermalz. Though a beer using more than 10% rauchmalz is kinda like having food with 10+% Mexican salsa with any food, where too much of any strong flavor overpowers all the other flavors. This is kinda also what happened with the coriander in Lebkuchen Braun Ale.

Interesting. While I know Augustiner Lagerbier Hell and Edelstoff are probably Munich's favorite beers - I think you're the first person I've ever met who was a huge fan of their weissbier. Not that it's bad (or even less than excellent), but it seems to be neglected. At some of the Augustiner-branded places in town they were even serving draft Franziskaner instead of the bottled Augustiner weissbier.

Enjoying a Kulmbacher Export on a absolutely beautiful spring afternoon here in southern Germany. It's not anything ubber special, but it sure hits the spot after a vigorous mountain bike ride in the woods. Ahhh…

It has a taste profile that I really love in a hefe. My all time favorite is La Cumbre's Little Slice of Hefen but I can't get it here, so Augustiner fills the void.

Alprisbacher Weizen would be my distant second favorite - so far.

Love Alpi Hefeweizen - great brew. Have you tried the Guttmann hefeweizen? Look for it when down south.

This was the beer for December, 2013 on Pax Bräu's Bierkalender, the Pacifator. Obviously, just from looking at the label, it's a Doppelbock. At 8.7% ABV and 20 Plato, a nice drinker for the winter. Now, it's mid-March and I had planned on keeping it over a year before drinking it, but those plans don't often work out. I ended up opening it last night to appease my girlfriend, and that's why I'm only reviewing it now. I had the first 1L bottle in December and it was very good, so 3 months mellowing time can only make it better. In December, you could really feel the heat of the alcohol, which is why lagering it seemed like a good idea.

Appearance: Sorry no pic, but it's deep amber with lots of deep orange tints, clear as a bell, under a tan frothy head that disappates quickly. It looks like a typical Doppelbock.

Aroma: Lots of caramel spilling out, roasted malts, toast, and a hint of alcohol in the nose, basically smelling like a aromatic, boozy Märzen.

Flavor: In the front a decent bitterness, Noble hop bitterness of Spalter or Hallertauer, not overpowering or very noticable, but perceptible when looking for it. You also get burnt, roasted flavors and the umami of Cajun blackened chicken and some fruits like pear.

In the middle, lots of caramel, Münchnermalz and some Carafa maybe, some hints of whiskey flavor, probably from Rauchmalz, and in the perceptible bitterness of the abovementioned Noble hops. Also, there's still a noticable alocohl twinge, but not the slight burn of the fresh beer in December.

In the back, again, full blast on the caramel, overtly but not overly sweet; it's more a caramilized sugar with some undertones of deeper burntness, and I bet it's from the Rauchmalz. I get some plums, pear again, and a bitterness that doesn't come from hops. The beer reminds me slightly of those Belgian Spekulatius cookies,

usually windmill shaped in the USA, for their full of caramel too, but this beer goes beyond that and gives you the hearty umami and a slightly salty aftertaste from the Rauchmalz. WOW.

Aftertaste is all the above, just intenser and a lingering umami note like the deep sound of the end of a rung church bell.

Mouthfeel: thick and wondrful but not oily, very palate pleasing.

Overall, a WOW beer, not overwhelming wow, but near the middle of the WOW scale. I like it because it comes across first as a simple boozy Märzen, but then the other complex flavors pop in and out all over the tongue to leave a super satisfiying, relaxing gemütliche patina on the mind. (Was that overdoing it a bit?) WOW.

Totally agree with Alpirsbacher; Augustiner hefe though; not into that one at all. If I could find it in my area; Ayingr is my hefe of choice.

I had a look at my Hefeweizen reviews and Augustiner was in my top 3, only ones to beat it were Ayinger Urweisse and Guttmann Hefeweizen. I can't believe I dont have a review for Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen though! I think that may edge it!
