Everyone knows Prairie Artisan because of their Bomb! and Noir variants, but once you step away from their big stouts, 95% of the rest of their portfolio is Farmhouse Ales. PA Birra is the closest thing to a true farmhouse ale and it's pretty damn good. Mother's in Springfield, MO also does a spring seasonal release of Spring Batch that's close but not quite to where Birra is yet. Also, I've heard nothing but good things about Jester King but it's been a long time since I crossed south of the river, so I'll try and pick some up next time I'm in Texas.

ALE APOTHECARY - Sahati and Sahalie are world class beers.

Really wish Jester King distributed to Oregon. Had a few Hill Farmstead too and they are also excellent (but everybody already knows this)

Ale Apothecary is amazing. Pricey, but worth every penny.

Funkwerks does primarily Belgian ales, their saison is great, but Trinity brewing in Colorado Springs comes to mind. They have a stout and an IPA, but their farmhouse ales are what they are known for. Red Swingline is an amazing beer, sour mashed, brett fermented, and dryhopped with citrus hops. Also, crooked stave.

I have to second Jester King. Jeff and Ron are doing fantastic things down there. They have a killer location which is very amenable to spending the day at, they are super friendly and will pull nails with you for hours on end, and have a unique biota/microflora that is quite tasty to my palate. On my last visit there, I kept getting ghost whiffs of the brewery long after I left. And since they deleted the sacch from their yeast profile, apparently the regular beers like Commercial Suicide have come to life I am told. I have yet to try one of the newer yeast profile beers without the saccharomyces but people are saying they have gotten much better over the previous batches. They have balls to delete that from their culture as most places don't have the palate for purely wild and lab cultured brett/lacto only beers. I know in New Mexico we aren't there yet as a population.

Their microflora really speaks to me and it's damn cool that they are utilizing it. I bet most places are simply buying drie cultures from White Labs. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, it really makes the ales a bit mono-dimensional. Jester King has multi-dimensional flora in droves. Their art is pretty unique as well, but that's not my favorite part of their overall persona if you will. Some of the characters creep out the kids a bit.

If I had to be gay for any one brewery, it would be for Jester King.

took me months before I could muster the trust to put down $23 on Sahati. And that was only because a trusted bartender at my favorite beer bar (who has had EVERYTHING) told me that it was on par with some of the best that Cantillon can offer. Tried it a week later and was blown away.

Piney river in MO is a awsome brewery you probably never heard about. The don't make farmhouse beers but they are made on the a farm

It's useful to refer to the guidelines for a farmhouse style ale when talking about beer. On the other hand, "actual farmhouse breweries" are tricky things to define in my opinion. Yes, more breweries are popping up in rural areas, and many are using a portion of locally-sourced ingredients (in a few cases a significant portion), but they are beer companies first and foremost. That said, many of these breweries listed here are producing some great stuff.

Brewery's not open yet. They're doing the festival circuit and trying to get their brewery ready for a summer opening. Really nice folks too.
