Now I'm not sure if it was a case of not wanting to call it mild or genuinely meant as a different style but Steam Box's Dark & Handsome is the closest taste to cask Lancashire dark mild I have had out of a bottle

Yeah, Dark seems to be the most common euphemism for mild. Brains Dark, Rhymney Dark etc

I was a bit surprised at Brains dropping the word mild
I thought mild was interwoven with the history of the coal miners
    isn't it though?

Had my last Ten Fidy yesterday night and very nice it was too. I have a 750 of Barrel aged Old Ruffian lined up for the next days.

I've gone into great detail where Mild got a bad reputation from
penny pinching landlords pouring beer back from drip trays
With Bitter only bitter could be poured back
whereas dark mild got mild, lager, Guinness hell I've even seen one tosser pour in the cola lemonade drips

but now we have the craft beer/real ale sanctuaries this should be made dim & distant memory
or so rare that its extremely shameful for the perps

plus the fact with these gigantic hop monsters and expresso beers
the subtle, delicate and complex flavours of Mild are needed more than ever
    for real contrast.

a rather heavy day yesterday judging at SIBA BeerX, too many to list and as they were blind tastings I'm not too sure what they were. Some excellent beers, to be expected as they'd all won in Regional Competitions, I did spot a couple I recognised. Ended the day at Sheffield Tap. Liver will now rest before heading to Hawkshead Beer Festival on Friday

    Nervous tick going on here
    Revisionist Rye Pale Ale
surely it can't get worse than the Red & Dark IPA

Well that was just above average
and almost enjoyable though not a full on Rye beer

    Going to go for
what I reckon will be the toughest challenge for Marston's
    Revisionist Saison Beer

    Okay taste
the saison and farmhouse and continental hops are there
but like a lot of the revisionist line is watered down
in the Saison case it is like its been diluted with cheap macro fake pils rather than mineral water but there is a random Marzipan aftertaste
so even though it's far from a good Saison
bearing in mind the rest of the line it could be a whole lot worse.

Right If I have one more revisionist beer there will be only one left for future tasting
so going to take on the Hefeweizen
a style I could take or leave till some tasty Thornbridge version

in any case I expect dull things and have a beer treat lined up after.

    Fucking love that beer.

And it is a real shame about mild. I still remember my first pint of true, cask conditioned mild, Adnams Southwold Mild, in a pub near the brewery. It was so drinkable, such balanced carbonation and delicate flavours. So good I went and got another half way through the first pint. Now on the rare occasions I see mild in a pub go something like:

touch of the burnt rubber again, bit too sweet in the middle.

    meh

Now a pre dinner homebrew. Not bad, not great. Tastes like McEwans Export but with more flavour and proper bittering

Post dinner homebrew, a strong english ale. It's good, very fruity at the moment as it's only a couple of months old.

Ended up having a Six Point The Crisp pilsner with homemade pizza. At least so far. That bottle of 120min is looking pretty vulnerable now...
