It drinks like a mild apa, certainly not a west coast ipa. Very little discernible bitterness.

I tried rebel IPA and long trail limbo side by side when they both came out. I thought rebel was good but limbo was awesome.

I drank a few sixers of the REBEL a month or so ago...thought they were dam good, especially for the price. Great head, sticky lacing, hoppy, pine, nice juicy sweet middle and a smooth bitter finish ...just an all around great IPA. Then I moved on...I've been on a BIG IPA kick and have been demolishing everything. Figured I'd work my way back around to it.

I'm not a SA basher...and yes, there are a shit load of them on BA. So I thought it funny every time I've seen someone slash and burn Rebel...but after awhile I wondered if I over rated it on my first tastings? So I did what any smart, thirsty BA would do and I picked up another sixer last Friday and guess what? Same conclusion, damn good IPA.

The Bros give it a 85 (very good) and I'd probably give it a little higher than that...87/88? Yes, everyone has a personal opinion on flavor but even BA gives it an 82 (good).

I think when it comes down to SA and their brews the loudest haters are the ones you end up noticing. Rebel is probably one of the best beers in their "regular" line up...IMHO!

oh yes...topic... not tried Lagunitas yet but am looking forward to it.

Rebel is a decent beer, especially for the price. But here in eastern Mass you can buy Rebel ad Lagunitas at nearly the same price. I'll opt for the Lagunitas as better beer and I don't think it is a serious challenge to West Coast IPA's. But if if exposes more non-craft drinkers to better beer then it has succeeded in its mission much like many of the other Sam Adams brands.

Both are mediocre IPA's, I'll take either one at a restaurant, I'll bring a 12 pack to a party, and I'll have no problem drinking either one anytime.

I did a blind taste test of Lagunitas IPA vs Sam Adams Rebel and the Lagunitas had a better nose, taste and lacing. I was surprised. My wife set it up for me so it was completely blind. I actually like the Rebel so it was interesting how it turned out.

Interesting that you consider yourself a homer for Lagunitas, being from Chicago.
Are you originally from Petaluma or perhaps Lagunitas, CA ?

If Lagunitas widely distributed Sucks on tap, we wouldn't be having this conversation...

I'm a big IPA guy and frankly I'd rather have boston lager than rebel IPA. Just not hoppy enough for me, Lagunitas IPA takes rebel IPA to back door pound town.

That is correct, I like to get my Lagunitas fresh right from the brewery on 16th street in Chicago.

Or will when they open it.

Rebel IPA is pretty decent for Sam Adams and that's coming from someone who doesn't like Sam Adams at all really. Sucks is still miles ahead of it though.

Tried posting the Tweet but it got deleted inexplicably, but here's what LagunitasT tweeted recently:

"I've been laying back from controversy, but I wanna say that the BostonBeer crap I'd foreshadowed occurred as predicted. Parasites."
