Give me caramel banana - I know, I know, but just wait and try it. Give me blackberry stout. Okay goddamnit somebody already did this one too. Give me peach stout. Jesus! Done as well. Okay well nevermind, that one's done already. PEPPERMINT STOUT, MOTHERSCRATCHERS. Also beef stew stout. Potato pilsner. Beet old ale. Crab juice and Khal Khlalash.

I don't understand this argument at all. Suppose Pursuit of Hoppiness is a great beer. If it won an award at World Beer Cup, it probably is. What on earth does that have to do with whether it represents a new beer style or not?

The Germans and the Czechs among others were very inventive as well. Often a case of "needs much" but when you look at all the work done by our forebears it does bear out what you say.Tweaking recipes doesn't create new styles. Also of course in the past nobody knew or cared about styles, they just got on with brewing to get the best results with what they had.Which is why style guidelines become more flawed the tighter and more specialised they get.

I would like to add genuine Scotch Ale, not the stuff which is passed off as this.

I liked the idea but the thread has been degenerated into nonsense and/or misinterpretation enough that I don't care to sit down and think through which styles I would really like to add.

However, while I do understand that an overabundance of styles can pose a problem, I also lean towards more is better. There are so many recognized styles of beer that the BJCP just lumps into general and "specialty" categories. I mean, a Belgian IPA gets entered into the same category as a Trappist Quad... really?

My main issue is with the known/established styles. I don't condone the creation of something like Triple IPA, and even Belgian IPA isn't so odd in a "specialty" category. But beers like Quad, Sahti, etc seem like they deserve their own style listings.
