I want to plan a trip to New Glarus this spring/summer around beer and fishing and had noticed there is a state park directly to the west of the brewery called the New Glarus State Park. Was wondering if anyone has ever camped there and walked to the brewery before? Also interested in any recommendations of fishing spots in the area. Looks to be a lot of rivers and creeks in the area including one along the state park boundaries. Would be fishing for smallmouth bass, trout, and possibly catfish. Willing to drive a reasonable distance from the campsite to good area.

You can walk to the brewery but the park isn't much to speak of.

BM me and I may be able to set you up with some info. A co-worker of mine lives in NG and I can ask him tomorrow about fishing.

The campground is alright, just make sure you book ahead of time because there isn't usually anyone in the front office.

Also a main bike trail goes through the campground, it's just a short bike ride into town maybe less than a mile.

It's definitely one of my least favorite state parks in Wisconsin, and I've been to a lot of 'em. But if the intent is to not have to drive to the brewery, it'll work.

There are so many other places to stay you should stay somewhere nice if your making the trip. So what if you have to drive 1/2 or so it would be worth it.

This thread is relative to my interests. I've been looking for an excuse to get my Dad out to the NG brewery fishing and camping would be the perfect excuse.

It's a small campground but it's not bad either. Last I was there, we had nice privacy in-between campgrounds with lots of wooded areas (as opposed to open fields at some campgrounds). Really not much to do at the park but if you're just up to camping in that park, it will serve your purpose.

Looking to do this exact thing once it gets nicer out, maybe in May or June. Want to get some people together for a weekend trip to New Glarus for a visit to the brewery plus the usual stop downtown. My big question is: how much to they crack down on the drinking at the state park? Would a (responsible) bottle share be out of the question?

The most important question that's been asked in this thread thus far.

I camped there last year, and we drank beer in the open, I don't think there's a law against it(I'm looking at you Michigan). Don't stay at the last campsite that is farthest away from the parking lot. It is very steep and not comfortable to sleep on.

There's no rules against drinking in a WI state park. As long as you're respectful of other campers, nobody will care. Get out of hand and a DNR ranger will pay you a visit.

I've never camped at that park, but have at many other WI state parks, and it has always been completely fine (and even expected) to drink. Just don't make a lot of noise after their designated quiet hours and you're golden.

Thanks for all the advice. I've always drank alcohol in WI state parks, just no glass if you are at a beach. Don't really mind that the New Glarus state park isn't very scenic, plan to spend days fishing the area, evenings at the brewery, and nights sitting around the fire. Plan is to walk to the brewery and not drive so this state park seems to be a good choice.

I love this thread I think the next obvious question for me anyways is where some places to fish near the camp ground are?

I don't know of any lakes nearby besides in Madison or rivers but there's gotta be something closer than driving to Madison from the camp ground. Either shore fishing or boat fishing recommendations are welcome.

I have a vacation to New Glarus planned for April 21-25. Planning on staying in New Glarus. Are there any good bike/hiking trails in the area besides the short downhill trail mentioned previously? Or would it be better to stay elsewhere and just take a trip to ther brewery.?
