hi everyone, as some of you may know, today is a jewish holiday called purim, during which, besides for other customs such as prayer and bringing gifts to neighbors and friends, drinking is heavily encouraged, parents will drink with their kids, older guys will drink with their friends, etc. i want to buy something special for the holiday dinner tonight, so far i am considering bell's hopslam, firestone double jack, ballast point sculpin, goose island lollita, stone double bastard, north coast old rasputin, dogfish head burton baton, and founders kbs, i have never tried any of these beers. would love to get your thoughts, or other recomendations, before making my purchase. Thanks!

Well if you want to stick with the holiday theme, you can always try out beers from these guys:

    Shmaltz Brewing Company

Remember... for Purim you must drink so you can't recognize your own enemies (any they can't as well)...

    Hello,

Can you list the foods that will be served? I would go to the BA beers list and find some IPA's ,German and Czech pilsners. You mentioned you have not tried the beers you listed. I would check the beers listed here by you and find a good craft beer store in your area to ask questions. What beers have you served your family and friends in the past?

A few of those will be very hard (impossible) for you to find today, such as KBS. It is released April 1, and for the most part, if you don't get to the store within a few hours, you're out of luck.

Double Bastard might also be hard to find as it was released several months ago, but you can check via their website's BeerFinder.

Hopslam is another one with pretty big demand, and though you might find some (check their BeerFinder and call the shops), it has been completely gone for over a month for most of us.

Burton Baton, Old Rasputin, Double Jack, and Sculpin should be relatively easy to find, but Double Jack and Sculpin are beers best enjoyed as soon as possible. Many BeerAdvocates won't purchase any IPA over 2 months old, and I don't blame them- there is a very real and quick decline in flavor (for IPAs). Old Rasputin is probably on the shelves at most bottle shops around you, it is brewed year-round and stouts, unlike IPAs, age very well.

Lolita has a decent demand, but can usually be found randomly throughout the year in slower-moving bottle shops.

I was going to mention Shmaltz, but that's been covered. As for something special, you could search for their anniversary beer released about a week ago.

After reading your post, and seeing what your options are, I have just one question. Where the hell do you live that you can just run out and pick up a six of Hopslam? Seriously, in the time it takes me to post this response, that's how long it took for the shops where I buy to sell out of Hopslam. So, if possible, you buy as much Hopslam as you can for yourself, followed by the KBS, then take the Sculpin for sharing at dinner.

i try and serve beers that i think will appeal to and impress a wide range of people, i'm the only serious beer guy in my group of friends and neighbors, so beer of my first choice wouldnt appeal to moany of them. in the past I've served weinstephaner, hoegaarden, sierra nevada pale ale, lagunitas sucks, goose island matilda, and others, for the record i went with hopslam.

by the beer store where i shop hopslam sold out right away but then their second shipment moved much slower, and they had it in stock, distribution isnt great in new yor outside of manhatten, the demand for these beers isnt that high so if they get them in they dont sell out right away like they might in other areas, for the record i took hopslam and sculpin actually, the kbs was out.

so i happened to know that the store i shop at had the beers i mentioned in stock, the only when that was gone when i got there was KBS. since im an observant jew and i just find it cool that the shmaltz guy pays for kosher supervision for his beer out of respect even though it isnt necessary i really want to love their beer but i just haunt tried anything from them that i loved, although ive only tried a few, have you tried that one in the picture?

Love this post! As a fellow "member of the tribe" I'm familiar with the adage of "drinking so you can't tell your enemies from your friends"....maybe we could extend that to "so you can't tell a KBS from Bud Light". Wow, that's a lot of drinking to get there. L'Chiam ("to life!")

If your family are not beer drinkers than i think your list is a poor one, despite being a tough one to work with. I think Lolita would be a pleaser though.

Cool. KBS, while excellent, would be the odd man out among the 3 you listed. Curious, were you supplying ever for people who appreciate the top notch stuff?

Where can you just walk in and contemplate buying KBS? Certainly not here.
