Damn I want some their toastes haha. Bachelor Farmer is the very epitome of hip. The hippest thing there? A can if Hams and a bag of Cheetoes for three bucks. So awesome.

you'll still sell more by cooperating with the brewery, trying to get their better beers, etc. the additional draw you have is other brews, your food, etc etc.

that said, maybe the people at the bars think the people at surly were being dicks at this or that point (not just for opening a taproom) and said "i'm done with this shit." you never know unless you're personally involved. my only point is that boycotting a successful brewery b/c they're competing with you via a taproom is stupid; you'll lose more business from the boycott, almost certainly.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. I just got back today from a week in Seattle and have spent some time in other places where brewery taprooms seem to operate quite well with bars and the like. I'm just trying to consider the other side of the coin and I don't honestly know what sort of a hit a bar could take in this very new situation we have here. It seems to me that at least for some bars, the potential to lose business to a brewery taproom is very real.

Seriously, what is this thread even about? A guy brought 20 cans home on a plane and ate at two nameless places that don't carry the beer in his luggage?

I'm more curious about this mythical shark and why it's being jumped -- does it carry a big wad of cash?

I think it has something to do with Arthur Fonzerelli. He is cool, hip even. People don't like cool/hip things so they don't want him in their bar.

Finally someone who understands the "Jump the shark" reference. Don't think the OP did. Most bartenders I've talked to are very happy for Surly's success. In the case of Pracna it was the owners who were not happy.

I originally posted a vid of the Fonz jumpin the shark, but it was deleted. The title is misleading because "jumping the shark" refers to selling-out or using gimmicks to remain popular, while the product ultimately goes into decline with no turning back... That's definitely not the case with Surly. I'm surpsrised nobody else questioned the title of the thread..

The example I could think of would be if Surly started making tequila. Only they might do that well too.

I need to hang out in the Midwest forum more. You all are a lot easier going than some of the dudes in the Great Lakes forum.

OP here. You guys stay up late do you all work in the industry? Anyway. I would be surprised if anyone misuses the somewhat obscure idiom Jump The Shark and I don't think I am.
Given my OP is asking a question not making a proclamation, "Surly Jumps The Shark?!" than tells a story of what I observed in MSP. Based on replies some think yes other no. I think the disconnect may be the relative nature of the question. So of course Surly is still the great brewery of MSP, but maybe the question should have been Has Surly lost some of its swagger?, its not as White Hot. Maybe the hipster places have to move on when losers like me fall in love and start packing their luggage with the shit..

I do now see how you are tying it in to the reference. My answer would be a definite no. Everyone I know thinks Surly is still "the shit" and I don't think they will be considered the evil empire anytime soon. Most are very happy with the work they've done to help relax the liquor laws.

I still am disappointed that this thread doesn't feature pics or video of Omar jumping a shark.

With a leather jacket on. That was really the key to The Fonz jumping that shark. The jacket.

Don't really give a shit about no surly at a bar at the airport... There is a god damned liquor store in the airport... which only sells wine. Hook it up for the cheap mf'r who doesn't want to check a bag. Hipsters?
