I would rank them the same:
    1. DS
    2. Abner
    3. Heady

Depends on which one packs the biggest citrus punch.

That almost sounds dirty. I'd raise an eyebrow if I didn't know we were already talking about a beer known as Double Sunshine.

I want to know what the hell IPAs from Cali and Chicago are better than these? Kern Citra DIPA is certainly better than Heady, and maybe Abner too, and pretty much even w/ DS IMO. The only other I can think of that's in the same league is Keene Idea, and both of those Cali IPAs are definitely NOT shelf beers as you implied!

I figured I would receive fairly harsh criticism for that. I didn't want to go listing all the beers I thought were better, as if my taste buds were the only correct ones in the world, but since you asked, here are some:

    Abrasive
    Hop Venom
    Notorious
    KR Citra
    PtE
    Crusher

Those are ones I like better than Heady, which I think is way better than Abner or DS. DS for me was overcarbonated and unbalanced. Just a hop assault that didn't care much for nuance. Abner meanwhile was decent and flavorful but thin and unremarkable in the end.

Just my 2 cents. Feel free to disagree.

See above. Abrasive is on the shelf in Chicago and is just awesome. That's probably the only shelf beer I'd prefer to Heady, but there are plenty I'd prefer to DS or Abner.

Get your grubby little Illinois hands off our Oregon beer. Keep your Alpine, RR, Kern. Hope Venom and Notorious are ours (and draft only, no shelving allowed).

Hop Venom was a revelation the first time I had it. Notorious was ridiculous too, although I had high expectations going in for that, so not as mind blowing. They are certainly draft only, but Boneyard is nice enough to send stuff to FFF, where I can get my grubby Chicago hands all over it.

Ah yes, I forgot FFF and Boneyard did a CDA Collaboration.

Jesus, palates gonna palate. This is about the 3 VT DIPAs, not "my DIPA is better than your DIPA".

The drinkability of Abner is what stands out for me and puts it above every DIPA I've had.

Well if you are ever down here in my neck of the woods I'd be happy to share my best stuff with you...or would you rather take it back home and enjoy by yourself?
But seriously, to each their own. I almost enjoy sharing beer as much as the beer itself.

Came here to say this. For my palate, Abner is a flawless DIPA. My biggest complaint with heady is prickly mouthfeel that distracts me from the flavors, which are spot on. Abner's got it all.

DS is great but not worth the hassle to find. I work nights, I'm not gonna drive my ass down to the farmer's market at 8 in the morning, or down to Warren to MAYBE get some. I'd rather spend that time and gas going up to HFS where I know I'll get what I want. That said, if Abner and DS are both on tap, I'm getting a pour of each without hesitation.

    Cheers

Okay I agree with Hop Venom and KR Citra being of equal quality. I also put Double Galaxy in there too, with Bad Boy, Abrasive, Ephraim, Abner, Kryptonite, Boy King, Notorious, Higher Standard rounding out the top twelve in my book.

Heady to me can't be beat because of how low it finishes and that touch of peachy sweet the yeast adds to keep it from being as dry as that gravity would seem to make it be.

Double Sunshine gets extra points for its extreme refreshing characteristics that stand alone in that trait among all those beers.

Glad to see you have experience and some excellent choices to back your opinion. One thing is sure, we are drinking the finest hoppy masterpieces in world history, and things just get better and better for those who love them. Cheers!
