This is actually going to be on Long Island, but if it goes as well as I think it will/can, I may look into doing another in NYC, as I work in Manhattan.

There have been many people on BA and other trading means who have been great in helping me get some really hard to get and coveted beers. I really appreciate it; these will be auctioned and I really see them raising some good money for MoD.

Sounds like a great event and I know another BA/former BA who is doing a similar event soon.

If this isn't too far out on the island I may still be interested, please keep me posted (prob should have moved this convo to BM!).

i have this problem but for the most part i buy ageable beers. IPAs i only buy fresh and have no problem drinking those. the amount of beer i have is getting out of control though. sure, most of the beers i have will age well for years to come, but it will take me years to drink them. i'm now renting cellar space, not at my house. which is good and bad. good because i have a proper cellar and place to put my beer, but bad because the 'out of sight out of mind' aspect leads me to believe that i don't actually have too much beer.

i need to have people over more often, and break out good stuff for 'whatever' occasion.

part of my problem is most of the beers i have are big beers that are not usually suited to a weeknight. girlfriend is not going to split a Bois with me. if all beers were in 12 oz format it would be easier. life is hard

I've realized I have a problem and have committed to stop buying beer. I might have as many as 100 bottles in my cellar, and won't be buying anymore. especially since we have a couple more months of coolish weather where I don't need to be drinking IPA's.

I'm trying to stop trading as well which is a compounding problem, bc then I need to make sure I have extras etc. finally I just decided to send out good stuff (something I would cellar) as extras. but I'm really trying to stop trading as well. if I BM you please ignore me  !!!

coming here will invariably lead to wanting something, and accumulating faster than you can drink it. you dont come here to NOT want to get more beer, and there isnt much of a middle ground in between.

i find myself compulsively looking at the labels at the store, and going "oh, ive seen that on BA, the Bros like it, limited production, better get it," bla bla bla...its hard to stop. Luckily, I'm quick to feel guilty about having more on hand than i can handle and can bump the brakes a bit.

    but to each his own.

I ask myself two questions before buying more beer:

    1) Will my fiancee be mad if she finds out I bought this beer?
    2) Will my fiancee find out I bought this beer?

When I first found this website it did seriously spike my beer purchases. And the worse thing is that I was buying such good beer that I couldn't resist it sitting in my fridge. Fortunately when it warmed up outside and I started running again it would naturally make me drink less beer just because I was waiting until an hour or two after the workout to start.

Buying beer can be more addictive than drinking beer sometimes, and what really triggers it in my opinion is that collector's instinct, the need to check something off a list. You just need to control that mode of thinking.

That really is the key. In 2013, due to a beer of the month club membership, a couple of homebrew batches, and weekly trips to the store, I would normally have 40+ beers on hand (which I thought was a lot until I read this thread). Personally, I feel that's way too much considering I'm the only beer drinker in the house. I always felt pressured into drinking the time-sensitive beers asap and it made the hobby less fun, almost like I was forcing things.

The fun is back in 2014! My beer of the month club membership is over, and now I only have 15 beers tops on hand. I go to the store a lot less and enjoy what I have - I no longer chase limited/seasonal releases either.

I had this similar experience with wine about 25 years ago. Going to barrel tastings, buying futures, vertical tastes, always seeking out that next "great" new bottle or winery that I had to try, cases started piling up quickly. It did feel great to be able to pull out any type of wine for whatever occasion presented itself. Funny thing happened along the road: mortgages, car payments, kids, braces, heath care, etc. This was then followed by college tuition for the kids and dealing with aging parents. Reality sort of put things in perspective fairly quickly. For me anyway that sure cured any thoughts of really going wild at collecting anything, be it beer or wine or spirits. Still love buying and enjoying, but nothing like before where I was seeking out the next "I gotta have it" thing.

When I was a kid I collected baseball cards. Then it was cd's. Then it was ticking off seeing different bands in concert. Now it's beer. Same exact mindset.

Buying beers is like buying trading cards back when we were kids...

Yeah. I've kinda gone crazy with Trillilum's 1 year anniversary. I've ended up going to their brewery three times this week and I'm going again tomorrow to wait in line for their Cuvee.

I was using this technique and doing so well. Then last weekend I caved and drove toToledo for JuJu, Hi-Res, Double Simtra, etc. I'm so weak. Plus with all the Short's limited realeses I stood no chance.
