How do you pronounce Rochefort?

"Roach Fort"

 

I say "Roash-fort", but it is likely "Roash-for" when said correctly.

 

While we're at it, is Orval pronounced "Or-vul" or "Or-vahl" ?

 

Without a pronounced "t". Think Inspector Cleuseau.... Rosh forrr... from the back of the throat and sincere.

Its a bit mechanical, but very close.

 

In French the "R" comes from the throat. Do you really want to pronounce the word completely correct in French?
The word jalapeño is pronounced hal-a-PEE-no in English and ha-la-PAIN-yo in Spanish.
My English guess would be ja-LAP-eno but WTF do I know?

 

Or-vahl (French) -> hard rolling r almost Orh-vahl (miniature pause between parts)
Or-vahl (Flemish)-> mellow soft spoken with the sound growing softer towards the end, h almost non-existant

 

I don't really think its pronounced like I said. Just being silly. Silent t like The Colbert Report.
