well I wouldn't get angry about it, but I would also never support a place with such scummy business ethics.

Got it. So gouging and profiteering doesn't really exist unless someone holds a gun to your head and forces you to buy something.

Just for fun, would you call it gouging if I BM'd someone in this thread and said they can have one of the ___'ations that's in my basement for $40 ?

Those RR prices aren't really THAT bad [other than the pliny]. The screaming eagle $2499 cracked me up, as did the penfolds grange $999. I should have asked about the PVW 20y.

No the definition of gouging is "...can be distinguished by being short-term and localized, and by a restriction to essentials such as food, clothing, shelter, medicine and equipment needed to preserve life, limb and property"

Note the bolded part. It is impossible to price gouge on beer because it simply isn't a necessity. Profiteering? Yes all day PtE @ $40 is profiteering.

"Price gouging" is often used as an expression. As a couple of people have pointed out, it is also has a precise legal meaning. Noting the differences is fun, but kind of off topic considering how widely used "price gouging" is on this forum and others. No one is saying $44 Pliny should be illegal nor has anyone talked about the availability of Pliny as a safe drinking alternative if DC was devastated by tornadoes. So the confusion should be pretty minimal. Maybe we can have your comments merged into the numerous "price gouging" threads so we can be more educated.

Sorry when I read "holds a gun to your head" it made it apparent to me you didn't know what you were talking about. Carry on.

Just because other people use it incorrectly all the time doesn't mean us that know the actual definition of price gouging have to follow suit.

There's a lot of broad generalization in this thread.

I've bought Pliny at 1 West.
Paid $30 and it was 2 weeks old.

It wasn't for my consumption. Personally, I wouldn't pay half that if it was for myself. It was a gift for someone who would appreciate the gesture. To this end, it was money well spent.

While I was in the store, a customer was asking one of the workers about beer and he was trying to push the RR bottles on her. In an effort to increase his odds of making the sale, the worker pulled me into the conversation with him claiming that I was a "beer connoisseur" (I guess spending $30 on Pliny makes one a connoisseur in the eyes of the establishment). He was hoping I would sing the praises of RR. I recommended a Duck-Rabbit sixer over the RR, and removed myself from the conversation. The customer went with her own gut and picked something totally different.

While this incident illustrates the concerns of some here, I had no regrets making the purchase. In my circumstance, I knew what I was buying into and the store satisfied my wants appropriately. Spending $30 on a gift and making another east-coast beer fan happy is a win. The customer without knowledge of the product had enough common sense to avoid making an inappropriate purchase. I can't imagine many people making a purchase like that willy-nilly.

I've been to the store since, but didn't find anything there that I had any interest in purchasing.

Like most of you people I hate that store but I go in a lot for the comedy of it. I also work at Paradiso across the street so I'm in the neighborhood. As of yesterday here's some of the gouging I saw.
    3F Intense Red for 60
    Geuzue Bio for 50
    Rose De Gamrbinus 50
    Westy 12 50
    PtE 30
    Consecration 30
    Damnation 23
But the craziest of all wasn't in the beer department. It was right in the window.
Pappy Van Winkle 20. 1400 dollars.

okay.. i was an attendant of the bourbon bar hillfarmstead/alchemist tasting a few weeks ago.

the result of that event has sparked interest in making the availability of HF/Russian River among other non-regionals a more permanent mainstay in DC (supply & longevity).

that's all i can say now without being spammy.

It may be crazy, but after-market Pappy 20 will eventually sell at that price. I realize this is retail, but I consider it after-market considering Pappy came out about 5 months ago, and the entire run is bought up in a day or 2. I don't think Pappy 20 is worth the regular retail price, let alone $1400, but I am fairly certain someone will buy it at that price. Odds are they bought it retail at another store, I doubt BT would ever send Pappy out to someone that would hold onto it to offer it later for an insanely marked up price. But then, maybe they don't have total control over where it goes.

Never underestimate how much lack of availability will inflate prices.

RR can't even supply California with enough PTE, highly doubtful there would be a big supply of it somewhere else out of the state.

Shaun Hill has said on the record that he will not be expanding distribution beyond Vermont, and the odd kegs that find their way to NYC and Philly. And Philly does not get Pliny the Elder in bottles despite being in RR's distribution area, so I doubt DC would get that if RR actually started distributing there.
