Hey BAs, I am looking to get some advice on ordering beer from websites and having them shipped to North Carolina. I've been wanting to order some west coast beers from one of many websites (e.g. Liquorama, Letspour) but I am concerned about the legality of the situation. I did some research and found this page on the North Carolina ABC website (Listed below). It basically says out of state retailers cannot ship directly to consumers, and if the do, the consumer could be fined thousands of dollars potentially. I contacted Letspour which assured me that they could ship to NC, but again the risk appears to be completely on the consumer so they can ship without a problem on their end. I tried to contact North Carolina ABC but got no response. I am curious if anyone has purchased beer online and had it shipped here. If so, has anyone ever had any trouble with the process or ever heard of anyone having trouble with the state?

    Thanks in advance!

I've ordered beer quite a few times, never had any trouble. Not entirely sure of the legality, but I feel like the retailer would be more at risk than consumer if that were the case?

I have purchased beer before from Craftbeerkings and Blackwell's in California, and have always received my packages unharmed. I would guess most of the places that sell and ship beers would hopefully know the laws about which states they can send to. I believe if the retailer allows it, then it is legal.

I also know that Bruisin Ales ships beers out-of-state.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm willing to risk it since no one seems to be having trouble. I'm just nervous because the law says that having beer shipped to you from an out of state retailer is a class 1 felony and there is potential for a $10,000 fine (See the website in my original post). I'm glad to hear that it isn't enforced.

While yes, it is illegal to ship beers into NC without going through a licensed distributer, the fines are really for folks who are importing and reselling, not so much for the average joe, who's buying something for himself. While I bet the ABC board would have a different opinion, I truly doubt they have the manpower to monitor everyone in NC's personal mail boxes.
