Has anybody checked the place out yet? I have not seen any talk of it on here since the opening.

Been there twice. Nothing that blew me away but good enough that I go back when in the area. I've sat at the bar both times and beer was great and so was food. Was there on a Saturday night and managed to get a spot at the bar.

Went once. Beer was good, food was good. If it wasn't in NYC I'd probably frequent it more often....but there are so many places I always want to go to when I'm there...

Good to know it's good. I am really looking forward to checking it out, actually, but have been waiting for the weather to warm up- hopefully in a few weeks. Does anybody know if they still have a seasonal on tap (a Maibock, I hope)?

Last time I was in LES I ate at Cafe Katja. Beer selection was decent, but the plate of sausages was AMAZING! For a great night, hit Top Hops first for beer and then Cafe Katja for food. They are right down the block from each other.

Wechslers Currywurst and Bratwurst is also a great place for food and German beer.

I believe the seasonal right now is Salvator.

I went about 2 weeks ago with my wife and won't be returning. We got a coupon from guilt.com for an appetizer, 2 bratwurst burgers, and 2 beers for about $30 when it should be closer to $70. The place is like a fancy brewpub, not German whatsoever, ok that's fine. They put up a deer head or something near the bar to possibly make up for it. I ordered the dunkel lager and the waitress said which one? I didn't order exactly how it was listed on the menu, then she proceeded to bring me the regular helles lager. There are five beers on draft and between my wife and I we tried all of them because we were super excited to try very fresh lager brewed on premise, we agreed all the beers had a weird flavor to them, not infected but just really odd. The burgers were Ok, nothing to rave about. They should just call it Paul's Brew house.

I went on Saturday and really enjoyed the place. It doesn't try and hit you over the head with everything German like the Hofbrau House does. I thought the decor was minimal, clean and classy with a emphasis on the tanks and brewing equipment. I think it's a really nice place to sit and have a fresh beer that is coming straight out of the tanks. 5 beers on tap and they had them labeled as Hefe, Dark Hefe, Munich Lager, Dark Lager and Salvator. I'm assuming they call them "Dark" just to make them more approachable to the non beer enthusiast, it didn't bother me at all. It was a group of 10 of us and we were there hanging out in the afternoon for about 4 hours drinking at a pretty brisk pace with some food here and there and the bill only came out to $280. I would absolutely go back again.

Thanks for the recent reports, both of you. I'll try to do the same when I make it there.

I went there for the first time this Saturday just passed.

The Dark Weizenbock had no smell or taste and the Salvator looked and tasted like a beer towel was wrung out into my stein. I can't speak for the other beers.

I won't be going back again, especially after having the manager try to convince me the Salvator was ok and after seeing a bratwurst sandwich costs $16. The atmosphere is sterile in a weird way too, gave me the creeps.

This is all ok in the long run, for me. While I have had Paulaner beers which were good in general I don't like them. Besides, Whole Foods is right around the corner.

For that part of the city try Zum Schneider. Cafe Katja has a small selection but the beers are always good.

Michael, have you ever visited Hospoda and obtain the four pour types of Pilsner Urquell?

“Explain the beer program at Hospoda.

We have four distinct, technical pours: Crem Urquell (Hladinka) is the classic way to enjoy this beer in the Czech Republic, with balanced, full flavor and a creamy head. Slice (Snyt) is poured from the tap with a much more substantial head, about two-thirds of the beer, and is characterized by its refined bitterness and the silky coating it leaves on the palate. A Sweet (Mliko) pour creates a beer that appears to be entirely head, with a creamy, milk-like consistency and a slightly sweet flavor. Lastly, beer is served Neat (Cochtan) with no head, and a sharp, bitter flavor
that is unique to this extraordinary Czech beer.”

    Cheers!

    Jack

I haven't been there, Jack, but just looked it up. It's on the upper east side, so I won't be making it this time around, but those pours do sound interesting. I'd love to try it some day, and it's definitely on the list for a future get-together. Thanks for the info.

Michael, if you ever make it to Hospoda, please give me a scouting report. It sounds like an interesting spot.

    Cheers!

Was gonna say this. I've never been let down at Zum Schneider. Bier or food wise. Great place albeit a little cramped.

I have had a great experience every time I have been to Zum Schneider. Plus they carry Hofbrauhaus Traunstein beers (though, sadly, not the Weizens...but a quick glance looks like they currently have the Fastenbock on tap. Yum).

Hospoda is excellent, my favorite is the Neat...virtually all the carbonation retained in the PU, iow no head. The food here is tricky though, small pricey portions...but they occasionally distribute free appetizers. Great staff, immaculate glassware, clean bathrooms, etc.

Another good place, if you like Irish beers, is Fraunces Tavern. They serve Porterhouse Brewery (Dublin) beers there, as well as a number of other beers. The Porterhouse beers are quite good on tap, they recently introduced Hop Head which is excellent. Manageable ABVs and great Irish music on Sunday afternoons. When you're done with Fraunces Tavern you can go around back to the Dead Rabbit, a place where I've had Adnams Broadside and W&Y Bombardier on tap. If you go to the Dead Rabbit during the week they serve pre-1900 drinks upstairs, never did this though not being a hard guy...these specialty drinks may be expensive.
