    Blacklight IPA Launch Party[IMG]

Come join Widmer Brothers and Boneyard at Kelly’s Olympian for the official Portland launch of Blacklight IPA, a bold, hop-forward session style black ale. Blacklight IPA is a collaborative effort between the two breweries, and the first of six Widmer Brothers limited release collaboration beers with Oregon breweries to celebrate the 30th anniversary. The collaboration series celebrates the Oregon brewing scene and brewery’s 30 years of brewing in the state. Brewers from both Widmer Brothers and Boneyard will be there to answer questions and chat about the beer. Blacklight will be poured alongside three Widmer Brothers beers and three Boneyard beers. The two breweries also teamed up with LipPop Booking to present live music from RLLRBLL, Gallow Swings, and Downgown.

Friday, April 4, 2014. Event starts at 7pm; Music starts at 9pm.
Kelly’s Olympian at 426 SW Washington St. – Portland, OR

What are we thinking? 1 part widmer, 10 parts boneyard? or the opposite?

Not sure what to even expect with a Black Session IPA...

Weird style and Widmer managed to screw a Cigar City collab up last year, so I am not getting my hopes up.

Anyone know what the draw is to collaborating with Widmer for Boneyard? Slap your name on presumably an inferior product that doesnt represent your beers just for higher distro and increased name recognition?

Seems like Widmer is getting more out of this.

Sorry to say, but that's the first thought that crossed my mind as well. Assuming we're talking about the Gentlemen's club variants, the worst part was that they made an ocean of it and the price was crazy expensive. (16 tons down here in Eugene is still trying to come up with creative ways to unload their supply - so far, cutting the price in half hasn't been the answer).

So yeah, given that experience, I'm not exactly champing at the bit to try this beer.

Yep, they are the biggest shelf turds in Spokane. I don't see them leaving any time soon either.

Maybe they did at Widmers place so they could brew a beer without taking up tank space that they need for their beers.

Most of the collabs Ive had have been turds in general, so Im not sure Id want to do a collaboration. Seems boneyard can make better beer without touching Widmer.

To give some credit, Widmer makes some pretty good stuff that only gets served at the Gasthaus (pub). I have had some awesome sours, stouts, and other creative beers there. Unfortunately, everything they market sucks for the most part.....or is at least underwhelming.

I thought the Gentlemens club was actually tasty, but waaaaaaaay overpriced and they made way too much of it. I would gladly pay $8, but not $20 or even $15.

No clue why Boneyard is doing this. Does not fit their brand at all. That said, I will taste it with an open mind

Maybe they did it just out of respect for Kurt and Rob.

AFAIK, all of the 30th anniversary beers are being brewed on their 7bbl pilot system at the Rose Garden.

Thats still saved tank space for Boneyard who is barely meeting demand right now, just 7 bbls at a time.

Until I see more Hop Venom around Seattle I'd say they are not keeping up with demand.

I'm much more excited for the collab involving boneyward, block 15, and Fort George for this summers 3-way IPA, but thats just me..

And perhaps just to do something ... fun? Different? If you love brewing beer and you're spending virtually every hour of every day trying to produce enough RPM and Hop Venom to keep the people placated, might be enjoyable to head up to Portland and do something different.

And re: Widmer, I think Upheavel is pretty good.

I agree, Upheavel is great. Just bought a 6 pack yesterday. I also love the Summer Citra beer that they do.

Since Boneyard doesn't bottle or can, they actually get more exposure by doing this and allowing for greater distribution. I hate having to do a growler fill to get Boneyard stuff. Hopefully this recipe is mostly from Boneyard and Widmer is just providing the industrial scale and bottling. If this works out, maybe they will allow some contract brewing i.e. Alpine/Green Flash or 21st Amendment/Cold Spring.

Most breweries are also friends with one another and help each other out.
