OK, my son turns 21 tomorrow, my wife wants me to buy him a case of beer. I live on the East Coast, in PA. What do you get a college kid? I like Sierra Nevada (have the IPA sampler now), local breweries like Liquid Hero, Victory, etc. As a college kid, he probably is used to Bud Light / Natural Light etc. Give me some suggestions, what do I give the kid!!! Need some ideas!

You could start by asking him what he usually drinks. Its obviously no surprise that he drinks beer under age. I would go for the gusto and get him what you like. Share it with him and explain the goodness about it.

If it was me, I would buy him a really good bottle of single malt scotch plus maybe a sampler pack from a local PA brewery.

if he's demonstrated that he likes the taste of beer, Victory's Headwaters Pale (or even Hop Devil) should be pretty well received. If he prefers malty sweet to hoppy bitter, maybe some Troegs HopBack? but yeah...what sokrman14 said. Ask him what he likes.

I work at a college and from what I can see at my local shop, Fireball is the hardest thing to keep on the shelves.

Get him something from Brooklyn Brewing if you can. Their beers are pretty solid but aren't so huge and flavorful as to overwhelm a new palate. Their beers are really good gateway beers to introduce a newbie to the world of craft brewed beer.

I would go with the SN IPA variety pack, then he can decide from there. I did something similar recently for the same reason......... son turning 21. I would not stereotype the youngsters coming into age any-longer as BMC drinkers since many are branching out and taking advantage of the choices available to them. My son brought many of his college friends over to the house and you may be surprised what they know and love regarding different beer. Plus..... it doesn't hurt learning from parents when they see you drinking craft. Your mention of Victory is also good if you grab 4 different 6 packs. Good times ahead.

Seconded! I also like the Victory suggestions- so hopefully there is a Victory sampler available to you.
Also a great suggestion- a very delicious beer no matter how experienced you are.

If you like Sierra Nevada, get him that, and enjoy some of the beer with him.

When I turned 21, I can't remember all the different beer I had those first days, but I sure as hell remember the first beer I had with my dad. Make sure it's something that you like, and something you think he'll like as well, and enjoy it together.

Anything bitter is a bad choice. So, any Pale Ale, IPA or a Stout is NOT a good idea. How about some hefeweizen or wit beers for a beginner?
