High expectations, but a very big disappointment?

That was my reaction to it when I tried it freshly bottled.

Then I forgot about the other three bottles in the back of the fridge for about nine months, found them, and sampled one.

    Eureka!

I do not approve of this message.

I had a completely flat bottle and was still impressed. Oh well.

Mine was super duper flat too. Hmm, let me go look at my review, I'm not remembering much more than 'it sucked'.

LOL I have the lowest review on BA for it. Oh well.

Now it's coming back to me. There was a taste of rotting tangy fruit and super malt char in it. No thanks.

In my humble opinion two breweries that are highly overrated
#1 MAGIC HAT~ apparently cool labels and taphandles sell beer to the college crowd.. Beer basically BLOWS
#2 Stone ~ just dont see what the hype is all about

BTW had a growler of Victory Storm King that a bud got form the brewery with the nice german style swingtop lid after at least 4 months and that sucker was still carbonated and delish !

Being rated #1 IPA on BA - I had huge expectations for Sculpin. It did not meet those expectations.

Being a big fan of Racer 5, I had big expectations of Apex. It did not meet those expectations.

I've since learned to try to drown out the hype, and temper my expectations so that I can approach each beer fairly.

I had the same experience. Maybe it's because I dove right into really good IPAs (Hopslam, Two Hearted, Double Trouble) and haven't really had any that aren't well-rated on here, but it simply didn't blow me away. I liked it a lot, and I'm asking my friends to bring some back from CA if they can, but just not what I was hoping.

The hype always plays a role in this disappointment for you. Sometimes I think I justify my expectations by liking it more than I should, though, so I don't know how to tell which will be the case.

I didn't love Sculpin, although I really enjoyed it. But then I picked up another $10 bomber -- I don't understand my own brain! See the post above for more evidence of that.

Okay, I'll be quiet now. :grinning:

Only two come to mind. They pretty much seem to be the same beer.

Knee Deep's Brewing Co.'s Hoptologist DIPA. With a mad scientist with a hop for a head on the label, I was expecting something outstanding. But it was an average DIPA if not below average.

St. Arnold's Santos. Big hoopla about how it was a "whole new style" and amazing. First one was gross. Gave 1 to my brother in law, and he said it was gross. Decided to try it once more last night - grosser than I remember. Maybe its a bad batch, but the other 3 are going down the sink.

You got that straight! It's all yours!

I will also say that I didn't care much for Orval when I first tried it, but I've changed my mind about that one...

Nothing crazy here, but I was really excited to to try Samuel Smith's India Ale and I was thrown off by the nearly undetectable amounts of hop. I love the hoppiness of American IPAs. I know English IPAs have less hop focus, but there was practically none in this one.

I ordered it at a bar, and was expecting Belgian Strong Pale with hints of Brett, but I got the yeast packet with only enough liquid to call it water.
