I managed to snag 3 Hunahpu bottles at Huna Day this year and live to tell the tale. I popped my first bottle a few weeks ago and it might be the best non-BA stout I've ever had. Hell, it might be the best stout I've ever had. Seeing all the trades for DB Huna got me wondering--can two barrels make that much of a difference?

Of course, the barrels change the profile. If they didn't, then why bother releasing two different beers, right? But are people offering their first born children for DB Huna because it TASTES that much better/different than Huna, or is it moreso because DB Huna is simply much scarcer than Huna? I'd be curious to hear from those who have tried both. If DB Huna is really in another league (hard for me to imagine given how amazing regular Huna is this year), then I'd probably be tempted to trade an organ for it. Like a pipe organ. Or my kidney.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Welcome to beer trading. Scarcity = people want. Many of these one offs or limited beers aren't the best beers ever. The fact is that a lot of people want to try them and the supply is quite low, which creates a huge demand. Many of these beers are exceptional. However, you can find wonderful shelf beers that taste exceptional as well.

Honestly if you think Huna is the best stout you've had, then you should try and stock up on that and not worry too much about those variants. I suggest you perform a control experiment on more easily obtainable beers to see if the barrel quality is something you prefer. My suggestion would be Old Rasputin and BA Old Rasputin. Both are available now and wont break the bank and trying them side by side will let you know what parts you enjoy more. I've even gone so far as to make a 'mock' BA version where I toss a dash of bourbon in to the non-BA version (and sometimes this is actually better than the two production beers).

I thought you had 62 gallons of Hunahpu you were trying to sell...

I've had quite a bit of both. DB Hunah is on another level than Hunah (as good as regular is)
