Doppel-wit? From the looks of ingredients and review, this would go under my "experimental beer" category. He might have to watch out, the German brewing community likes to burn witches and warlocks making such brews at the stake.

The beers by Pax are good example of how things are changing in the German beer world. He's been really successful, going from 1K L batches last year to now 2K L. That's a 100% increase in output and obviously 100% growth. That demonstrates the demand out there in Germany. I keep saying, once people start tasting this stuff, they'll go apeshit over it. But don't worry, Germany will never be as bad as the MOAH crowd in America, Steve. Still, everyone of my friend's who've tried this beer, and my g/f, go gaga over over it. So now, the thinking is now ever so slowly changing, person by person.

I think that we both are in agreement that something has to change, and it slowly is. There will always be the "extreme beers" and the "to style" beers, I think there is room for both (Stahl rolling his eyes, I know). Again, my mantra is that beer needs to come out of the doldrums and people need to see it as a more valuable consumer good rather than mega-volume-produced Plörre as opium for the masses.

Entertaining and informative read, as always. I'm glad you enjoyed this beer, but it does not sound like something I would enjoy.

Haha - interesting MJ. Of course it's more a trademark issue for Rothaus vs. Mäxle, but it's interesting to hear that the beer is sub-standard - as a contract brew I shouldn't have expected more.

So much average beer being sold in the name of tradition. But again, that is happening around the world, including the US, with the bonus being that at least the lion share of breweries in Germany are German owned.

My son picked this up for me when he was in Chicago last week:

He also picked up the Vollbier Hell and the Weissbier Hell.

Not as good as the one I had sitting in a sidewalk cafe in Nürnberg last fall, but still süffig. I'm sure the situation also had something to do with it. A beautiful brown/ruby color. Nice, long lasting head. A nice toasty flavor with a touch of dark fruits. The ABV at 7.1% is at the low end of the range, so it hides its alcohol well.

Hopefully this beer makes it to St. Louis.

Now this is available as well as Weltenburger Asam Bock so I have choices. If only I could get Kneitinger.....

I'm VERY much interested in being able to buy some Andechser Doppelbock in my area. I've only got one bottle left and I'm tempted to drink it almost every weekend.
I think my plan is to grab some Celebrator, Asam-Bock, Korbinian, Optimator, and Curator for a random blind tasting.

This looks pretty delicious. Also, the "Bier des Tages" guy seems to be taking a page out of your reviewing book @boddhitree: his FB post reads "Wow, wow, wow! Wenn man sein Fasten bricht, dann bitte NUR für einen Bock wie diesen. Zwischen 6 und 6,5 % Alkohol, geile Farbe und das Malzaroma ... Wow, wow, wow! Wir waren beeindruckt!"

And a couple of pics to make you even thirstier

I was going to say about the same in my area. I tried the Vollbier, but wasn't as impressed as I was with the Doppelbock.

My son got them at Binny's so it should be about the same in your area! :grinning:

Eh... no Binny's that close to me. Had to opt for a couple smaller spots where I found mine.

I am, but Binny's hasn't become ubiquitous. Yet.

The closest Binny's to me is about half-an-hour's drive one way, I have a lot of options closer in-between.

    Schlenkerla Fastenbier

ABV unknown. Served from the wood into the most beautiful 500 ml glass ever. Hefetrüb. Consumed on premise.

Although it looks darker in this photo, this beer is really a hazy, reddish brown, topped by really beautiful white foam. Extraordinarily creamy mouthfeel, which, I suppose, is the result of the serving style. I can't really tell you if this beer was lightly smoked or strongly smoked, on account of I was sitting next to an open window outside of which people on the street were all strongly smoking, unfortunately for me (blech!). Anyway.

This beer is unbelievably süffig. I had half of it down before I even knew it was gone. A few people (sorry, I'm forgetting exactly who!) have talked about beer that is gone in three gulps. This is one of those beers. If you are in Germany during the Fastenbier season (there's still time, people!) then you really owe it to yourself to try this one.

As I am faced with leaving Germany, I am still amazed that I have been here for almost four years but will still sometimes be taken aback by just how great the great beer here really is.

    5/5

I distinctly remember the last day of my initial year abroad, sitting with my buddy in Schlenkerla at a table by the window drinking one Willibecher of the Maerzen after the other and shaking our heads at how incredibly good the stuff is. This was after nearly a full year of drinking there at least three times a week.

p.s. agree on the glass. Awesome.
