Ah, Frank Double IPA. How's that for a #tbt? Believe it was the top (or one of the top couple) rated DIPA's on BA circa 2005? Never tasted it myself but did hit up Breakwater shortly after it opened and tried what was suppose to be the recipe for Frank (was it Mavericks??) Remember it being pretty good.

Why doesn't Oceanside Ale Works ever get any mention on this site?

Just my opinion, but I wasn't very impressed by Acoustic when I went recently. Personally I'd skip it and go to Coronado's brewing facility, which isn't too far up the 5.

While you're in the AleSmith / Ballast Point area, try to stop by Intergalactic. They've been open a year, and I haven't had a bad beer from them yet.

I concur they are worth a visit, but I don't think you should mention them in a "Breweries not worth your time" thread. LOL

    Helm's IMO is skippable.

    Because were not firefighters

Good question though. I have heard that they have been winning some awards over the last year or so and I've considered picking up a bottle from them but I don't think they date.

Yes, Maverick's was Frank Double IPA. When Kirk left Breakwater I assume he was the only one with the recipe because they continued brewing a beer called Maverick's but it sucked and bore no resemblance to what Kirk was brewing.

Up A Kriek was straight up Robitussin. One of the worst sours I have ever had.

i would add a +1 to saying Alesmith isn't a good tasting room is cra. only been a few times but have always had great treatment there. very friendly staff, knowledgable about beer (some of whom are cute girls), what more do you want?

I'd spend a great deal of time at Alpine. Sure it's a trek to get to, but their beers are phenomenal. I would recommend hitting a few of the San Diego breweries early in the day and then make it a point to spend the early afternoon/evening at Alpine eating barbecue and fried sides while sampling their delicious array of grog.

I'm just glad he didn't mention Aztec. That place is just awful.

It kind of is. I don't know why, but it makes me sad to think about. Their whole vibe is just kind of depressing.

I like their beers, but Alpine's food was truly forgettable.

If the very good beer and average atmosphere at Alesmith isnt your bag, head down the street to Rough Draft for the average beer and very good atmosphere.
