I agree with earlier comments re Zum Schneider, only problem is it can get extremely crowded and there's limited seating. But the German beers are always top notch.

Holy crap...just went for the first time last Friday. Had a great time. Bartenders were awesome. They had a nice mix of good house stuff and known craft stuff. Nice combo, imo.

Had a Schlenkerla Fastenbier at the front bar which was tasty as hell and was drinking their house oyster stout in the back. The back bartender was awesome. Very helpful, very informative, nice as hell too. Smiling the whole time, I love that, someone who seemed like she really likes doing what she does.

I don't usually go that far downtown but I have to say, if I'm down there again, the Fraunces will be a must-stop for me. Great, old school feel. Shit, George Washington supposedly held his secret meetings under the same roof.

It is also part of the American Whiskey trail.

I've never heard of this place before, but a friend of mine lives in that area. I will definitely check it out soon.

Usually each year in the summer and early fall a number of presentations are given at FT, such as the NY/NJ campaign of 1776 and other Founding and Am Rev topics. I saw Thomas Fleming give an excellent presentation on the battle for Brooklyn. You have to check the FT website in the spring and early summer.

There have been numerous changes to FT over the years and some of the museum-ness has been lost, but if you go upstairs I think tours are still available. They used to have some great stuff on display, such as the letter from GW to the Hudson River "flotilla" commander instructing the commander to protect the chains up by Fort Lee (at the present day GW bridge site). I went to FT about seven years ago when HB reserved the main dining room for a night of NY German history...great food and great beer. FT is the only place I've heard of with a Scotch Room.

I believe GW was at FT several times, I'm pretty sure he went there with other generals and some politicos immediately after the British abandoned the city (83?). I believe his resignation from the Continental Army was "celebrated" there with him in attendance, one of several such celebrations throughout the nation. Maybe he did both on the same night, I forget. Also not sure, but I think GW made Fraunces (the owner) his chef when he went back to Va.

I suggest going behind FT and checking the taps at the Dead Rabbit, they frequently have rarities there from Britian, Ireland, and Scotland. The DR has something of a phoney-baloney Irish decor with some American Civil War blended in, but the food is good and you might just get lucky with the taps.

Posts like this are why I'm happy I joined the forum. Thank you for the history. Very fascinating this is right in our backyard.

I hadn't heard of this place before, but definitely want to make the trip now. I see they show Champions League games there. Any idea if the place would be too crazy to go for the final?

As mentioned by another poster, above, it can get crazy crowded at times. If Bayern make the CL finals, I highly suspect that would be one of those times. Still, if you plan ahead it should be worth a shot. I know I'd head there for the game given the opportunity.

If it's Bayern Munich or Borussia Dortmund (or both of them, hehehe) it'll be packed to the gills.

Again, it's a great place for German food or bier, one of my favorites too, but it does get cramped rather easily.

Holy cow! I'm glad I didn't waste my time, as I was having second thoughts.

Thanks to some of the posts in this thread my group wound up at Zum Schneider this past Sunday afternoon and had a great leisurely lunch accompanied by some fantastic beers. Out of the ones I had (HB Traunsteiner Helles and Pils, Kloster Andechs Vollbier Hell, Riessdorf Kolsch) I'd say that the HB Traunsteiner Helles was my favorite, although the rest were no slouches either. I also got to sample Kloster Andechs Doppelbock and Schneider Hefeweizen from my friends' glasses, and all beers were delicious, fresh and well-kept. It is definitely the place for German beer in NYC.

Afterwards we continued across the street with an enjoyable session at Alphabet City Beer Co, where I was able to get a few glasses of Schlenkerla Fastenbier among others. I even brought home something nice (an Italian Gose) from their store.

So thanks again knightlypint, guinness77 and especially @herrburgess for steering me that way. It was exactly what a sunny spring day should be, and then some.

    Thanks g.

I'm hoping to hit the area where at least parts of the Monitor were built, Ericsson Park in Bklyn. Hoping for some good Polish bars over there, in addition to the history.

Another good place is The Grange, both Alexander Hamilton's estate up on 141st St and a bar/rest with the same name about 2 blocks west of AH's place.

A friend of mine mentioned to me that the owner of Schneider Weiss (?) will be at Zum Schneider tonight to present a porter weiss, if anyone is down around the LES....
