Not to mention the fact that they use "many" as a descriptor and don't elaborate. Sounds like crap journalism to me.

It's like telling a 90 year old man that the oatmeal you ate every day was really bad for you. he would laugh. There are a lot of things that in their scientific context are appalling. Guano , isinglass, Tripe Soup! I eat tripe soup. I had a fellow tell me today that veal was cruelty upon the earth. The fatted calf? Really?

The one item that actually could concern me would be BPA, (bisphenol-A), but after name-dropping it, it isn't mentioned anywhere that I could see in the rest of the article.

I assume that would be found in most/all canned beers, as a component of the plastic can lining? Maybe in the sealing gunk inside the bottlecaps too?

If people stopped eating or drinking what had "bad things" in it, we'd all be on bread and water, and the bread would be laced with something (OMG carbs!!!!) ...... !

    I liked this bit:
For information on the long-time use of finings as a preservative, see this this example from a BBC source about life in World War II:

" Mother used to put eggs down in Isinglass, a preservative solution, in large crocks when eggs were plentiful. They didn’t have the flavour of fresh eggs but were very useful for cooking. And of course there were dried eggs useful for cooking - some good cooks claimed they could make a decent omelette with dried egg."

No she didn't. She used a substance called water glass which was a solution of sodium silicate and used to be quite easily available when I was a boy. We used it to grow crystal gardens. No connection whatsoever with isinglass.

I remember a lecture when the question of spraying fruit was raised. It was pointed out that if you ate enough oranges to reach a toxic level of residues you would be long dead from Vitamin C poisoning from eating the rest of the fruit.

propylene glycol isn't an ingredient in beer, its a coolant used for the process but wont be in your beer. Just another false bit of info.

It won't be in your beer unless your jacketed tank has a leak and the glycol seeps in. Easy to detect with a simple gravity check ( higher post ferment gravity is usually a sign).

That post wasn't written on April Fool's Day, but clearly it was written at amateur hour.

Just open the post and this webpage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies in different browser windows side by side. Every time you tick another fallacy off the list, take a drink.

But Propylene glycol alginate is. See MECHANISM OF BEER FOAM STABILIZATION BY PROPYLENE GLYCOL ALGINATE published in The Journal of the Institute of Brewing or this brewing supply house ad for Stabilifoam.

They left out dihydrogen monoxide, an ingredient in all beers and which, if inhaled in even small quantities, can lead to death.

Good point. There are several websites about the danger of dihydrogen monoxide. They are are very worth a visit. And that stuff isn't just in beer, it's everywhere. Every living thing that contacts it dies at some point in time. Almost as scary as the "dangers of beer" article.

Just a friendly reminder that some products that proudly boast that they're "BPA-free!" are actually worse than BPA-containing plastics.

I'll take the devil I know over the one I don't, especially since I'm A) Not a female and B) Don't plan on having children.
