If you like sours, Wicked Weed Black Angel, Indulgence, Amorous and Genesis will be out soon. Olde Hickory Imperial Stout, NoDa Hop Drop 'N Roll. As far as stuff on tap, check out Wicked Weed, Green Man and Burial. For stores check out Appalachian Vintner, Asheville Wine Shop and Bruisin' Ales.

just got back from Asheville a couple weeks ago...

    Bars to visit...
Barleys Taproom (get a JAde IPA from Foothills...lovely)
    Thirsty Monk....really cool place

I second NODA Hop Drop, a gorgeous IPA!! Can get it at Bruisin Ales, as well as many other great beers.

I enjoyed HiWire Brewing. Very cool upstart brewery with a really great staff and good beer...plus a friendly dog who loves popcorn !

Green Man Brewery has a great vibe and wonderful double IPA called Hand of Doom and Burial Beer Co. is excellent!

all three of these breweries are within a block or two of one another!

Enjoy and let us know how it went!

Probably read the bickering about WW and their bottle / event prices and not being quite at the level of Russian River and Crooked Stave and wrote them off. No point in visiting if they aren't up to those standards :stuck_out_tongue:

I went to Wicked Weed...I thought it was a really nice place, great food, and is going to be huge! But that said, I had Freak of Nature and wasnt impressed (don't grill me). Now im not judging based on one beer, as I will definately visit again. I just preferred the others I mentioned.

I prefer to drink the Wicked Weed Saisons when i go. I feel that is the type of beer they are best at brewing. Sours are pretty good as well. I'm not a big fan of the Freak either. I have enjoyed some of their other hoppy beers more.

Breweries/Bars to visit: (all within walking distance of each other)
    Wicked Weed
    Green Man
    Burial
    Hi- Wire
Asheville Brewing Company (I love Fire Escape, I am a huge pepper beer fan)
    and then finish at
Thirsty Monk (Belgian Bar downstairs, Americans style beers upstairs)

    Places to eat:
    White Duck Taco
    12 Bones
    Curate (pricey)
    Admiral (Pricey)
Bull and the Beggar (next to The Wedge so you can knock off another brewery, pricey, but food is amazing)
Wicked Weed (food is actually pretty good)
    Nine Mile
Barley's (decent pizza, downtown, pretty good beer selection)
Early Girl (Breakfast is their speciality)

    Bottle Shops:
Appalachian Vintner (Bigger selection, mostly a little cheaper on prices, lots of beers on draft)
Bruisin' Ales (downtown location, great selection)

I visited AVL this past weekend and made it to Wicked Weed, Green Man, Burial and Hi-Wire. Wicked Weed has many fantastic sours and saisons. The Mosaic Saison was one of my favorites. They also have their 1st Anniversary Barleywine on tap downstairs and it may have been my favorite beer there (sampled 14 different brews).

Email Green Man before going and ask for Jennifer. She's an awesome chick who went out of her way to help us. She let us look behind the curtain at Green Man before showing us around several other breweries and bars. I can't say enough good things about her. And I agree with the above, Hand of Doom was great.

Went last month for a 4 day weekend, after having been before and knowing the layout.

While everyone swears by Wicked Weed, meh. They only had one sour on tap, the place was packed out tighter than a sardine can, and the food was just ok. Cool place, great vibe, just way too damn crowded. The other nine beers I tried were not bad to good, but nothing stellar.

Burial, really an upstart place. Looks more like a dude's basement than a brewery. Altamont, HiWire, and the new Oysterhouse (no longer inside The Lobster Trap) were good, small, quaint. Green Man's brewery location is awesome, their brewpub Jack of the Wood even better and great for live music. Wedge is a must go to, as is Pisgah just outside Asheville. Asheville Pizza/Brewing is good, Barley's and Thirsty Monk for beers on tap, and Appalachian Vintner kills Bruisin' Ales on bottles (and price), plenty of awesome stuff to be had (got an OH Event Horizon, there was a full case out) there.

Virtually everything is walkable and easy to find, and downtown parking is dirt cheap.

Umm...I think you missed downstairs. Not all beers are available upstairs, including a lot of the sours and barrel aged stuff. Downstairs has the full allotment of beers and is setup for drinking/socializing, not eating (limited food menu). They typically have 4+ sours and 4+ barrel aged beers downstairs.

I ignored it when he said The Wedge and Pisgah are a must go.

Wicked Weed Dark Aged Bourbon Stout was my favorite.

Nope, went down there and hit a wall at the bottom of the steps. Asked the waitress later if there was anything on tap different downstairs, she said no. There were four barrel aged beers upstairs I did try, but as said, only one sour. If she was wrong, then she was wrong. I had no way of knowing that.

There's no need to shit on me if you don't like Wedge or Pisgah. I find both breweries to be good, unique, have a lot of offerings, and much more able to handle bigger crowds. Much more relaxed environments than a bar that's got people herded in like cattle. You can at least present them as options to other members visiting even if you're too cool to go there yourself.

Food OKAY? Yeah right! I don't think you know what good food is. And yes it's packed and crowded, but it's a BAR. It's funny how you're putting down the best brewery in town, while promoting mediocre ones. I think somebody is mad at Wicked Weed.

I can agree with you on them handling bigger crowds.

I also did present The Wedge as an option if they go to Bull and the Beggar.

"Must go", I strongly disagree with. Not shitting on you, but I have a different opinion living in Asheville and frequenting all of these places regularly. And you are right about Wicked Weed, it can get obnoxiously packed. I typically don't go on weekends unless it is during the day.

Yeah, if you go to Wicked Weed and don't go downstairs you're doing it wrong. It does get busy on Friday/Saturday nights though. If possible hit on a weekday, less busy and they don't do flights on Friday night/Saturday. First time I went they had a BA Old Fashion beer, it was fantastic.

Wedge isn't my favorite, but it is strategically placed as an oasis for when I can't shop in the river art district with my gf anyone. She keeps shopping, I get to have a couple beers.

While I am also not a huge fan of French Broad ( I know you didn't mention French Broad) or Wedge, I do like going to those places and sampling brews... You never know what you might find. The one thing that bugs me about Wicked Weed is that they rotate beers frequently. Something you had there a week ago that was amazing can be gone a week later. And worse, you may not see it again. Take Serenity, one of the only Sour's (or Brett's) I enjoy. After the launch of the bottles, it was gone from their taps and has yet to be back. Part of me wishes they would find a few beers and keep them around year round, like Pisgah does with their brews, then adds new stuff around the standards.
