I went in to Bees Knees and the deal is, if you buy fifty dollars worth of anything, than you get the Cantillion for $25.00. Not a bad deal actually.

So you end up paying $75 for the bottle.

Huh? You get $50 worth of other stuff - assuming this deal applies to the entire store, there is plenty to buy there aside from beer, including a great selection of cheeses and cured meats that are difficult to find elsewhere. It is an expensive shop, and I don't go there for beer, but they have some really nice gourmet products and sandwiches if you enjoy that sort of thing.

:astonished: You have to BUY $50 worth of their stuff (me no care about their artisan/farm-to-table/organic stuff) in order to BUY a $25 'Loon bottle.

Reminds me of another shop in Southie.

P.S. Didn't mean to get all up in that jazz.

well obviously if you don't care about their other stuff, then it's silly.

but if you value the $50 of stuff you need to buy at $50, then it's not a bad deal

No, you can do your shopping and get $50 worth of ANYTHING. It's because they're limited....

While dining out, do you always pay for a steak in order to buy a hamburger?

Loons are limited everywhere but most places don't make you jump through these many hoops.

this is a horribly flawed analogy. why are you acting as if the $50 of other stuff you need to buy will be immediately thrown out or not consumed?

it's been years since I saw a Loon on a shelf so I really wouldn't know. however if I was asked to buy $50 of wine bottles or beer - which I'm sure I will drink at some point - in order to buy a $25 Cantillon, that's a perfectly good deal. in fact if available tomorrow I will do this. the wine goes in the basement and comes out when I go to a friends place for dinner. it always gets used.

Agree to disagree on this issue.

I just don't appreciate when stores hold their customers hostage by essentially forcing them to spend more for the "right" to purchase a limited item.

Just sell me the damn beer, man.

ok, but I think the store is well within their rights to do something a bit different than "just sell the damn beer" when it's a beer they might not see again for 3 years and they probably only got 12 of them to begin with. this isn't Bud Light.

personally I wish more stores went this route. it's less random than a lottery, less rewarding to truck chasers, and actually gives a reason for the store to want these super limited beers. I think you'll find stores will tell you these uber-limited releases cause far more problems than they are worth.

How much stuff do you have to buy for the privilege of purchasing their $29 Sucuba?

I think the $29 Sucaba is a lot b/c that beer is not super hard to find. but actually I think if you switch that to "Parabola" the conversation becomes more interesting. Would you rather

    - all Parabola costs $15 and if flies off the shelf in a day and you need to get lucky or truck chase to find one
    - all Parabola costs $25 and consequently sits on shelfs a whole lot longer and you can buy one at your leisure if you wish

    ?

I think it's sort of a personal question but I imagine there are a lot of people who would prefer the 2nd scenario. perhaps it makes more sense with an even more limited bottle, but are people upset by the $50 Hommage that hit here?

Homage is a very different story. That's an extremely sought after beer which has only been bottled twice in the past 7 years. Personally, I thought the '07 was more like an homage to band-aids, so its not worth it to me. But I can definitely understand why someone would spend $50 on a bottle vs. a bottle of Cantillon's most basic offering.

Yes is it insane on both accounts. If you're a ticker, then fine, that's your hobby. Pay those prices for those beers. Then it's not insane. If you simply love beer and want to enjoy it, you can spend FAR less and get quality beer anywhere.

Your last example is different. If you're at a Bruins game you don't have any other choice if you want a beer. You have a choice to purchase other beers at a liquor store.

Have you ever been to the Cantillon brewery? That's not happening. Also, if you really want some Cantillon, there's plenty of Tilquin on the shelves, that's blended with Cantillon.

So if your a ticker then its ok, but if you simply love beer then its not? That doesnt make any sense.

I don't have a problem with the store charging $50 a bottle. If you don't want the beer just walk buy it. There is plenty of other beer to buy, I agree with you there.

My point for the Bruins game was that no one makes fans buy $9 Bud Lights (marked up 15 times its price), yet people still choose to buy it. If fans stopped buying beer, you can get the prices would start to come down. Yet, it is equally crazy they buy $9 Bud Lights than a store charging $50 for a Cantillon. But at the end of the day, people can do what they want. Buy $9 Bud lights, buy $50 Cantillon, sell $50 Cantillon, etc... if you dont find value in the price or cant afford them, walk away. In the end, if no one is willing to pay those prices, then the price will drop.

Anyone know if the Cantillon is sold out at this store?
