Apparently this store has a long history of selling beer at a massive mark-up.
Maybe I am missing something, but why do you shop there?

Yes, yes they do. Insanely overpriced on many things. I guess people keep paying the price, so they will keep charging the price. Not to me though - that's for sure

I cannot agree with someone who complains about a store overcharging but continues to support them. Sure people are going to say that completely avoiding them is cutting off your nose to spite your face but the same argument can be made by continuing to support them.

Supporting illegal alcohol sales does not help anyone either. They get caught and lose their license, you lose your store. They get fined, they pass along the the cost to you. The benefit has a limited shelf and is ultimately not worth it.

If you think about it, buying a can for that price isn't going to be much different than the price of trading for it when you factor in shipping and whatnot. Perhaps not such a bad option for those who aren't in the trading game...

I have no problem with stores selling gray market items. What's silly is to complain about the mark-up. If you don't want to buy it don't buy it, but of course they're going to mark up items from outside the distribution area. They aren't running a beer geek charity.

The markup on beers tells a lot about the shop. While I agree you cannot price gouge on a luxury item you can tell a lot about the stores character. And if a shop I went to did it I'd stop shopping there.

The owner is upfront with what he is doing he told me they go down to philly and truck up Russian river and they sell for 20 a bottle. The Reason this store gets away with it is because they are the only one who sell a lot of the beers in the area.

I don't mind paying more for good service. I frequent the family store that. Takes pride in their craft beer selection and customer service. The owner has made some good recomendations and has pulled out a bottle or two from the back that never made it to the shelf. They might be $.50. Or a $1 more on some 6 packs. But I woud rather shop there than the franchise that competes solely on price.

That's laughable. More than a damn 4 pack. Probably easier to just do the VT trader route. I was just up there and they're churning out plenty in Waterbury.

I guess I'm the asshole for trading Heady Topper $4$...

HT isn't rare. HT isn't expensive. It's just stuck in the far NE. I'd never pay that price, and I love the stuff. Shame on BA guys who look for 2X the rate on trades, but look at the FT list, and what they want in return.

If you support this place and their pricing strategies for other brews, don't come on here and try to drag them down for this one. "Dave" may not be so happy to see you next time.

The only way to get Heady is to get it $4$. It's a great beer but don't overpay for it...

I don't know of anyone who blames the seller - only the buyer is the person with the control, ergo, it's their fault.

Did anyone answer this? I would report that guy to the FTC, TTB or whatever body provides regulation. Circumventing the three tier system is a biiggggg no no!

I'm not seeing the big deal. A store sells their goods for way higher prices than other stores?

The highest I think it went for in Philly was probably $10 a can and those came through regular distribution channels. For a traded beer, you have original retail, plus shipping, plus a bit for the shop owner as there's no point in selling something without making a little something off of it. Someone else will gladly take with the service charge over going through the hassle of trading or buying on the 'bay, which would probably be about as much.
