If you had a chance to choose between going to Plymouth or going to Glasgow for a few days of Holiday and cask ale, which would you choose, and why? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts and experience.

There's probably more to do in Glasgow and it's 50mins on the train to Edinburgh which has LOADS of great pubs. Glasgow has some decent ones as well though.

The weather is bound to be better in Plymouth though. I used to live in Glasgow. It was like Bladerunner, rained constantly.

I used to live round the corner from The Three Judges at the bottom of Byres Road in Glasgow. They always have great casks on. Then from there you are a short walk to a bunch more bars... BrewDog Glasgow and Ashton Lane where you'll hopefully still find Brel a good belgian style bar.

While the weather sounds a bit of a possible problem, there's a lot to attract in a day trip or two to Edinburgh....

Sounds like it would be possible then to do a decent pub crawl.

There's a few good beer pubs in glasgow for cask, the three judges as mentioned, Bon Accord (amazing whisky selection too), The State, Tennents, Blackfriars, Pot Still I think, Brel is still there for belgian beers and theres the likes of Inn Deep and Munros for a more modern bar with a good range of beers. Plus a bunch of gastro pubs that usually have some decent beers then at the other end there's a few Wetherspoons that all do cheap cask beers, can be a bit hit and miss

Here's a handy map, might be a bit out of date but lists a lot of places

Edinburgh is close as mentioned and has hundreds of pubs within easy walking distance of one another, and you can even get to the lake district in two hours by train to try some good beers from that part of england too, although you'd be at the mercy of our train system so might not be a good idea if you are only here for a few days :open_mouth:

The map, even if a bit out of date seems a handy resource to start from in doing some deeper homework. Thanks.

The idea of a Lake District excursion is attractive. One of my favorite things to do on travel is get out to some local area I don't know and explore around a bit while meeting and chatting with some of the locals. That’s how I once discovered Loughborough was the site of the first Luddite rebellion and the Uni. there was once a University of Technology. :-)

I would have thought Plymouth by a fair margin even though I haven't been to either! I suppose I have also been influenced by Zimbo's views on Glasgow :grinning:

Glasgow. Remember, they didn't film World War Z there by accident. Walking Dead meets Bladerunner (Padraig:wink:). Makes for a pretty eventful night out actually.

BTW, huge tasting last night but I'm on dad detail so details will need to wait.

Thanks, I'd originally started off favoring Plymouth before starting a bit of homework.

Didn't see the movie. Have read about the book. Nice to have the persepctive of a Scot mixed in here. The concensus developing in the group here is Glasgow.

Indeed, wait it should. There are some priorities higher than beer.

While it’s not comparable to Edinburgh, there is plenty beer-wise to keep a visitor occupied in Glasgow. Also there is an exciting beer scene bubbling under with two new breweries opening in the next couple of months.

Yet another plus. Also seems like there might not be any BAs from Plymouth or they are keeping quiet on this topic. In either case that would seem to be a minus for them. :-)
