I don't see how he gets Pliny is any kind of volume when CA doesn't sell it in volume, at least on line. There's usually a 2 bottle limit. He must have a supplier who's in CA grabbing what he can and shipping it to PA and charging 20 bucks to cover costs and a profit. He's risking his license I would think if PA doesn't get a cut of the pie. The states have their fingers in everything and they want their money.

Wow, TWO can limit now?! When I went a few weeks ago it was a one can limit!

I don't live or shop near Pittsburgh, but why would you care? This actually does affect me if people from this store are driving to my region and snatching up cases of our precious 'tions (outside of the meh Damnation) which have been more and more scarce lately but as long as I can get one for myself every once and a while I'm happy. I know a place near in Campbelltown that does the same shit. Actually, I think I am annoyed now. I wonder how many people are driving from all over raiding our stores? :astonished:

He's gotta move product and IPA's can't sit forever, hell at that price there would be no limit at all, it's not like he's doing his customers a favor in the first place.

At those prices I wouldn't worry about being raided by hordes of guys with cash in hand. Ridiculous prices, and this from a guy who paid 10 bucks for a KBS or two, but at least that was a seasonal and there is no more, the others aren't even rare or hard to get in area.

HT and Pliny are registered beers in PA because of the Philly sales. However, I wonder if the rules stipulate that you must get beers from the importing distributor or from another distributor who buys from importer, which would not be the case for a store in Pittsburgh. We only get kegs of Pliny, but I do not believe the registrations take that into account, just the brand itself. Either way, I don't know what the penalty for these types of beer sales would be, but I doubt it's worth the risk even if they are just trying to hook up their customers and/or make a few extra bucks. They would probably prefer that people like us not talk about it on a public forum.

Philly is the only market listed on RR that's on the East Coast, but PA has rules for selling any alcohol. I would assume all purchases would legally have to go thru a licensed distributor, that's what they're there for. Hell, the distributor would/should hate guys free lancing on them. IMO this is kinda like selling beer out the back of the car for cash.

If you buy by the case, the prices are much more reasonable, like RR sours for under $11 per bottle at the right places.

I get more upset about the seller because the buyer typically doesn't know better. The seller is the one exploiting the buyer's ignorance.

Most people don't realize how easy it is to trade for Heady Topper, so they see a can for $12 and figure that is their only opportunity to try the beer, so they suck it up and pay it.

I went into my usual growler fill store and saw they had cans of Heady for $8, one per visit, not advertised or otherwise promoted. When the beertender told me I had to drink it there, I thought he was pulling my leg. Seems the deal was on premise only. I went for a can for curiosity's sake and I don't regret it. Probably would have paid up to $12 to try it once, so I could say I had tried it. Well, a few days later, I went back and they still had it for $8 a can. I tried it again and I didn't regret it again.

Its up to you if you want to buy it. You don't like the price walk away. For the guy who doesnt trade, doesnt think he has the ammo to do so or thinks he will never see another can of Topper maybe its his lucky day though?

    Just my .02

    Cheers!

Most folks who trade, would outright stop trading with a person who was turning around and selling the beer. Trading IS a hassle, and most of us do it to try new beers, or to help out folks who want to try new things that are local to us. We spend money on the shipping, that doesn't always (doesn't USUALLY) add up...

    It's not just a transaction.
It's like a transaction and a high five.
Take way the high five and I don't want to fucking UPS you some beer.

If the dude is driving out and tracking down beer to resell, that's illegal, but I don't care. Then I'm on board with you... he's overcharging, and that's extremely lame, but do what you want. If it's a trader who is going to stock shelves for a profit, I do care, because I'm not sending anyone beer for them to make a buck. I'm sending it because someone expresses an interest in something, and I'm trying to do them a solid.

Paid $10 for a can of HT last weekend at a bar in Brooklyn. I don't think I've never paid that much for a single can at a bar before (though 16 oz was nice). I don't blame the seller or the buyer on this one, I blame the hype machine. I've never tried HT before, but when you've read enough reviews and hyped threads about this beer, sometimes you'll pay anything to be part of the crowd.

That being said, Heady Topper lived up to its billing and the hype is very well deserved.

Sure, ignorance can play a role but I am not buying it in this instance. The beer you drink is a status symbol for far too many people. There are more than a few people out there willing to overpay to get their hands on certain beer.

Exactly what I thought. So you purchase beer, not only from a store that's ripping people off, but also selling beer illegally. I would out this store and at least report them to The Alchemist and Surly!
