Those bottles are pretty cool, just not into that style of beer.

I love Orval and their bottles, so this would be a glorious endeavor for me. However, getting a couple cases worth of Orval bottles by drinking it would cost me about $300...

I roughly have 200 Orval empties... and counting.

I have carbed hefes to 3.6 in Sierra Nevada empties with no problems.
I have carbed tripels to 3.2 or so and shipped them in Sierra Nevada bottles with no problems.
Cannot say I recommend it, but I have done it.

I *think* that single use American bottles are rated for about 3 volumes. Most will withstand considerably more, but some won't. A few explosions are pretty much guaranteed if you don't choose heavier glass, especially with multiple reuse (I have 10 year old bottles that are still in the rotation).

Jerry, I have some 20 year old bottles that I have in my rotation but I should caveat they are thick walled returnable bottles. Many of them are Rolling Rock bottles with white painting. I liked those bottles since there was no need to scrap off labels. I store my beers in cardboard cases so no worries of skunking.

    Cheers!

I gave away all my bottles when I moved about 13 y.o. else I would have some 25 y.o. Belgian glass.

Yeah you could accumulate that over time without being rich.
So far so good, no bombs yet. Been bottled since Tuesday night last week.

I have some old bottles from my dad's days of trying to homebrew. Thick as hell 16 ounce bottles with a short neck on them.. I need to pull them out when I get around to bottling some day.

Just get yourself some 6L Cantillon Methuselahs. Good to 14 BAR (203psi) internal pressure. That's like, 20 volumes, right?

Of course, so simple! I feel stupid now....

So far no bombs, only been 8 days though at room temp. I cracked two open on the 5th in celebration, they have a lot of carbonation and are incredibly sour. Honestly they taste ready to me, though the CO2 could stand to embed a bit more it lasted quite a while in the glass and even had decent lacing.
