Having a KBS right now and i recognize how different it is compared to most Bourbon BA stouts....the bourbon takes a back seat and works as a compliment more than a highlight (ex: BCBS), and i think there is something to be said for that kind of balance...how do you prefer yours? (Disclaimer: i love bcbs as well)

I like the bourbon character to be so potent in my beer that I often skip the beer portion and just drink bourbon.

Love bourbon in my stouts. Gives it that "Top of tha Mornin' to ya" flavor.

Just racked my chocolate stout onto 7lbs of cherries and a little over 2 cups of bourbon straight from the bottle. Not exactly a "bourbon barrel" beer, but like yourself, I was going for an accenting flavor from the bourbon instead of huge upfront hit. Very rare to find great balance when it comes to the style, in my opinion. Glad you found one that works for ya'.

I enjoy BCBS more so than KBS so definitely more forward.

I recently had Fegley's BBA Insidious and that is on the opposite end of the spectrum from KBS, a bit too much Burbon, but still excellent.

If I'm gonna have a bourbon barreled stout I want big bourbon flavors. Big bourbon, vanilla, chocolates & coffee with a thick rich mouth feel & very little carbonation.

    For me in no order...

If im having a bourbon barrel aged stout, I want that baby to taste like bourbon. That shit better be noticeable or else im disappointed....most of the time. Kbs was amazing this year... however lacking the barrel aspect compared to previous years. The coffee was overpowering the barrel characteristics for this past release...not a bad thing what so ever though. Hopefully the bourbon comes out a little more with some age.. even though i hate aging kbs.

Adding to what I already stated. Beers like; KBS & BN just don't do it for me. Sure they're well balanced but they don't carry a heavy bourbon flavor, burn or mouth feel & that's what I look for in a good bourbon barrel aged stout. What's the point in aging a stout in bourbon barrels if you don't taste the bourbon? Just my opinion.

If you are intto sours try Jester Kings Bourbon sour stout with cherries. Excellent bourbon flavor but the sour really takes over if it warm

Personally when it comes to IPA's I enjoy grapefruit & oranges. I like a session beer around 7%ABV.

I'm personally not into sours though. I never had one but when it was described to me I was turned off. I do have a bottle of jester king's black metal that I've been sitting on but never tried.

You have to start slow. Try Lindeman's Framboise. Or if you are a big spender, get some Cantillon. I have some local beginner sours if you are interested as well. ISO Black Note and Bourbon County Backyard rye if you are interested in treading. Have some Ever Wiesse from Night Shift and 2 cans of alchemist left ( Holy Cow + Bezzlebub) left plus a stash if you are interested in trading some bells. Send me a message. Sour is world to get into! My next adventure is barlywine which I still have not grown a liking for.

    Cheers

    Nick

Definitely love the mild bourbon character of KBS compared to BCBS. Has anyone tried to do a bourbon-"barrel" home-brew by adding actual bourbon?
