Title. I'll be in Columbia for the whole month of May and I'm of course looking for the best places to spend my time and money (on beer). I am definitely planning on hitting Westbrook while I am in the area, but outside of that, what's good in the SC beer scene? What are the absolute can't miss bottle shops/beer bars/breweries?

Best bottle shops: Greens on Piney Grove, Morganellis, and Total Wine.
We have a great new brewery in Columbia called Conquest that's doing some good stuff.
Bars: World of beer, The Whig, flying saucer, there are many more.
Then if you are going to explore sc some you have Charleston with Westbrook, coast, and Holy City. There's also a great bottle shop there called the charleston beer exchange.
Then you might want to hit up Greenville which is about 1.5 hours away and asheville, nc ( about 2.5 hrs away) that both have great beer scenes. Hope this helps!

    Definitely! Thanks a lot.

I plan on grabbing a bunch of Gose and Mexican Cake from Westbrook and whatever other good beer I can that's not distributed out West and sending it back to CO.

This pretty well sums it up. So...ditto the above.

Hit Morganelli's yesterday and I have to say, I already like this place. Selection was solid and I their single bottle selection was very impressive. Also, employees were all nice and seemed knowledgeable.

Yea I like morganellis a lot although their beer section is smaller than Greene's and TW, the selection I'd great. The staff is always helpful and they fill 22 oz bottles at the growler station which I think is the best selection of fills in Columbia

I will have to make my way out to Green's and TW over the next week and buy up all the Gose I can find (first two cans of my life last night and I'm in love).

I also really dig the growler options down here, this is not something that you commonly see in CO outside of a brewery/tap room.

If you make it to Greenville, hit Brewery 85 (sweet tea sour!) and Quest (see if you can bribe a Bourbon Barreled Kaldi from them) for breweries and Community Tap for bottle shop.

Follow Conquest on Twitter while you're here. If Brutus shows up, that's the spot (although I've heard it won't be around again until Finisher 2.0 hits).

I buy most of my beer from Morganellis b/c of convenience and like the guys who work there. Green's Piney Grove definitely has best selection (don't overlook the walk in cooler...most do).

Greenville is probably a bit outside my range seeing as how I'm only in town for a month and working Mon-Fri, but I'll see. I will definitely be down in Charleston one weekend and up in Charlotte for another.

I plan on hitting Green's either tonight or later this week after work to check out their selection. I am going to get a stock pile going here in the hotel and mail it all back my last weekend here

I also want to stop by Conquest and River Rat to see them in person and try out their offerings.

Conquest gives $1 off 32oz/$2 off 64oz growler fills on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so ya know. If you want bottles of their year round offerings, Green's PG has them, and for a bit cheaper than the brewery.

Also, I'm assuming your hesitation regarding Greenville relates to time, given that you have limited time away from work to visit. If it affects anything for you, Greenville is roughly the same distance from Columbia as Charleston, so it wouldn't be hard at all to drive up one morning and come back the same day.

Oh, and if you like smoking with your drinking, The Tobacco Merchant is a good smoke shop/bar in the Harbison area of Columbia/Irmo. They always have some good Imperial Stouts and DIPAs on tap, and usually have at least 2-3 regional taps of different styles.

The Whig is completely legit, definitely my kind of bar! Great recommendation, @bsyoung! Great food and beer selection and after 3 pints and a tasty BBQ sandwich, my tab was a cool $20. I will definitely be back!

My buddy got a pizza and said it was delicious.

I dropped $115 at Green's on Assembly two nights ago and tomorrow I am hitting Total Wine and Green's on Piney. My hotel room is looking like a beer store itself...

I have some coupons for tw if you're interedted. I dropped 100 bucks there today. Right now they have a deal of 15% off on all singles no matter what the size. They also have madam rose although that may not interest you since you probably have easy access to that back home

I actually have not seen Madame Rose back in CO so I may have to grab a bottle. I saw on TW's FB the specials they are running right now and when I was at Green's the other night they were running the EXACT same deals (probably because of TW). I ended up saving about $20 or so because of it so it worked out nicely.

I am sure I will. A trip to a well-stocked liquor store to me is like shoe shopping for most women. I browse and look, look and gander, take my time and enjoy it all!

Green's PG is having a sale as well, no coupon needed: 15% off singles/bombers (including the Belgian stuff in the "cellar"), $10 off when you buy 5 packs in a transaction (6- or 4- packs), and $2 off growler fills of $9.99 or more.

Edit: I just saw that you had seen the deal at Green's Assembly. I'll leave this up in case anyone else might benefit.

Just came back from Green's PG and Total Wine (hit them both back to back). Grabber another 6'er of Gose and some random locals + stuff I can't get back home. Both have VERY impressive selections, but I have to give the edge to Green's.

Conquest Brewing was definitely a good place to check out. The beer didn't blow me away (though it was definitely well made and their Medusa is a textbook quality stout) but the staff and atmosphere were both top notch. I stuck around drinking water for a good bit just chatting and I never felt like I was being rushed to leave or pressured to order more beer. Great place!
