    Back to Faust Week!

Faust Dopplebock (some may say "Dahpple-bahk")
500 ml bottle, poured into my 400 ml Schlenkerla Dopplebock glass. Best By of 27.02.15. ABV of 7,0%.

This is a good one! The camera's flash makes this one look a little darker than it actually is. It's more of a dark honey color. Honey in the taste as well. I'd say the alcohol is a bit more present than in some other Dopplebocks I've enjoyed, but this is a delicious beer. As with the Pils, different than what I'm used to, but definitely not in a bad way.

Faust's Doppelbock is amazing. One of the best of the style that I know of. I recently found this Faust-box for only € 5. Most of the beers were well at or even after the best-before-date. They were still alright. The Doppelbock in this box had a best before date of 11/2014. I cellared this and am looking forward to enjoy it at some time next winter. It has joined the shelf next to Lindemans Glühkriek which I bought in December, but this winter just didn't give one single opportunity in which I felt it might be right to enjoy a hot beer. Maybe next time...

    Faust Hefeweizen Hell
500 ml bottle poured into my generic wheat beer glass (RIP free Schneider glass...). Best before of 08.10.14, which in Germany, means October 8th, 2014.

I had a few friends over on Wednesday for the Real vs. Bayern game. Nothing huge, just a few people. Well they all kindly brought beer and now my fridge is over-filled. More beers were brought than consumed. This is a problem, because Saturday is our shopping day - like I imagine it is for every other human being in Germany, because stores are closed on Sundays and not open late during the week. But I digress. Anyway, we needed room in the fridge and the best way to make room in the fridge is to drink up some of that leftover beer! So I told die Frau that I'd have a Weihenstephaner Hefe-Weissbier tonight and then follow it up with the Faust Hefeweizen Hell. She chuckled. "Are you sure you want to do that to Faust? I mean, Weihenstephaner is pretty good..." She was worried that Faust would suffer by comparison.

Well my friends, I am happy to say that Faust is holding their own. Very spicy. Not banana-y at all (which is neither a compliment nor an insult). And a bit of that ol' familiar Faust magic that still transports me to those open lager fermenters. This reminds me - oddly, perhaps - of Ayinger's Ur-Weisse. Just something about it, not sure I can pinpoint it. But God it's good.

A bit dead around here so I dug out a bottle to review.

    Weltenburg Hefe-Weissbier 5.4 % abv

Appearance - Pale amber cloudy body with a nice creamy 3 finger head. Head reduces pretty quickly and lacing is pretty poor for a weissbier.

Aroma - Mostly cloves, touch herbal. No fruitiness/bananas. Pretty nondescript to be honest! Disappointing

Flavour - Transfers over from the aroma! Touch of cereal grains from the wheat (obviously) reduces to a nice lingering note but nothing really to balance it out. Maybe my tongue is broken.

Mouthfeel - Creamy, with a nice level of carbonation.

Overall - Definitely disappointing in terms of aroma/flavour profile. Good in terms of mouthfeel/refreshment. I'm a Weltenburg fanboy but I guess you can't win them all. Pass me a Gutmann!

    Prost!

    Cheers!

Hmm. From my review in 2012 (much further from the source):
You can probably call me a Weltenburg fanboy too, I think I've given good reviews to all the beers I've tried.

I personally really enjoyed the Weltenburger Hefeweizen. To each his own.

I've given good scores to all of them aswell. Had a look at the bottle this morning and its best before end of May, so perhaps I've been unfair. I'm going to punish myself later this year by travelling to Kelheim to sample from the source and correct my error!

I think the new craze of trying to interpret beer freshness is often overblown; end of May isn't that off, end of April and I might be suspect.
    That'll teach yah!

Agreed - combo of bland hotel living and work. Maybe better tomorrow - if I venture downtown.

To find which beer? In Wiesbaden...:astonished:
I still haven't made it to that Belgian bar in the Arcaden on Wilhelmstraße. If you go there, take some pictures and report please!
