    I could understand that.

I could ALMOST always do a stout, but I stress almost because there are times when if it's humid and hot and you're full of some food already I just can't go the extra mile and enjoy a stout, the gas that it brings, the overfilled feeling leaves it really hard to enjoy something like a stout coupled with the warm sweaty weather. But almost 99% of the time I can drink at least one Impy any time. "60% of the time, it works every time"

I'll take pale's and IPA's under the sun, and stouts under the moon.

Hear Hear! I agree, that's what really sets it, if I'm craving it I can have it and that's what makes something good, and most of the time I crave stouts

I love stouts also, drink them all year long, but during the hotter months, I tend to drink less. I would much rather have a white ipa or summer release when I am over a hot grill. It's just more refreshing to me, as the day winds down I may grab a stout or 2 though.

Could this alleged misconception be tied to the barley harvest? That generally takes place at the end of September in the northern hemisphere.

    Just preference my friend.

I'm definitely a "seasonal" type of drinker. I prefer BA beers (in general), Imperial Stouts, Barleywines, Quads, Belgian Strong Ales, etc. during the colder months and prefer Saisons, Wit beers, Belgian Golden Ales, IPAs, Pale Ales, etc. during the warmer months. I just have a hard time downing a 12% (with or without being aged in a spirit barrel) beer when I'm already sweating.

Each to their own is my philosophy. If you enjoy Stouts 12 months/year then do it! No one is stopping you man and you shouldn't worry what anyone else thinks. Cheers!!

When it's hot out the last thing I want is something sweet, roasty, or bitter. If I'm inside or if it's cool at night, I'll drink anything. But if I'm standing around and it's 80 degrees or hotter, it's a sour, saison, gose, berlinner, some wheats but not very many, or maybe a pale ale/lager.

The humidity in most of the Midwest is way worse than SC :stuck_out_tongue: Unless he leaves pretty far inland. Louisiana on the other hand.. lol

IMO the lighter styles definitely are more refreshing than stouts/strongs/etc., but if and when refreshment is really an issue, water works a lot better. Coffee is best in the winter, too, but that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it during the summer.

Also, if no one else has mentioned, Schwarzbiers ("black beers") are low ABV, lagered black beers that are great in the summer  Many are summer seasonals

If I am drinking out in the sun give me a IPA, saison, or a sour. Night time I like a bigger punch. Second Bigfoot of the night. I cannot wait to order a case for the winter. SN i love you.

I drink stouts year-round, and almost exclusively - but I avoid Stone RIS and seek out real stouts.

Porters and Stouts are my go-to drink and as long as they taste good, the time of year or weather conditions don't matter....so many beers, so little liver!

No, Stout is the perfect summer drink. Nothing better than a Guinness Special Export on a hot day.

    1. Dry Stouts are generally "light" - i.e., relatively low in alcohol, and light in body - partially why they are so popular in sub Saharan Africa and the Caribbean.

    2. Any Russian Imperial Stout, or many American Stouts.

    3. Cloying typically means a beer where the sweetness is too high and distracting, or not balanced adequately by hop bitterness.

If you want it (more) refreshing, drink it cold. Me, cellar temp is always best for stouts regardless of the ambient temperature

I drink very little stout in the warmer months. I drink what I crave. If I were to drink stout in the summer, it would probably be at night on a rainy or cooler day.

That is true, but what about all the other styles of beer that use barley?

Barley is harvested, stored and then malted year round.
