So I have 100% caught the trading bug since I started around Christmas. I have the foundations of a great cellar going, and have (in my mind) come to a place where I would like to make a leap and start trading for the larger format 'rare' beers. The 2 that top that list are the 2 that everyone wants, Prop and DB Huna (hell a regular Huna is a big time want of mine). The thing is I think I have the beers to maybe get some action on the more sought after 'upper tier' beers, but Im 100% not sure (and don't want to get thread flamed instantaneously). So my question to you guys is: Are these beers worthy landing the above mentioned 'whales'? If so what kind of combo do I need/how over the top do I need to go in order to land the big guys? Haves: Bo & Luke Backyard Supplication Consecration Bomb! (multiples) KBS (multiples) BCBCS '13 (2) BCBBW '13 (multiples) BCBCS '13 (multiples) Cheers! (TL;DR - is this list good enough for a Prop or DB Huna?)
You have some awesome stuff , but I have a feeling you may need something "rarer" to land these. (For example a highly rated, low bottle count, brewery only/very ltd Distro release). Bo & Luke is your best ammo right now in my opinion. But I hope you land one man! Good luck!
I think it's going to be tough to be honest, with what you have. I've traded a DB Huna. For Assassin yellow wax 1:1. And to get a Prop, I gave up Beat b6+Consecration+Supplication+Angel's Share+BA Blackout (he did even things out with high-quality shelf locals)
Agreed... I think you'll need more.... I gave up a JK MvB and CdT for DB Huna... and I also did this trade with a very generous, local BA who is an awesome dude for hooking me up with it. But I do hope you land one. Good luck!
Yea shoot for hunah, I've got a deep cellar and I don't even go for db hunah, the asking price is way to high. Keep trading and you'll find a trading partner who wants to share good beer just like you do. Keep it up man Cheers! Kev
Huna should be pretty easy to trade for if you put out some bait. Prop isn't really worth it. Just toast a little coconut and put it in a BCBS and it will probably taste better than Prop. DB Huna and some other stuff is harder to trade for as you need something of equal value. Ironically I got a case of DB huna and traded most of them away. Haven't even tasted it and only have a few left. just remember that there are usually beers that are just as good that you can get locally that are just as good. When you are just getting started don't get into the hype. You usually have beers (at least seasonal) that are pretty close to as good but you don't have to give your cellar for them. Start small. Work up to bigbeers as you realize what you can find that is rare and you can trade for rare beers. Seriously, Don't give up tons of beer for a stupid hyped beer. It all comes with time. If you have moola buy a bunch of cantillon from Belgium and then you will be able to trade for some bigger beers but it really isn't worth it when you are just getting started. Most hyped beers are not really worth it. I have to admit I just had a Black Tuesday and it was AMAZING. Just work up and get your cellar a little bigger and you can get beers like BT pretty easy. Prop is probably my least favorite BCBS variant. Don't buy into the hype.
Somebody trade the guy a huna for something. I don't have enough to trade him one and one of the ones I traded for had green wax on it. The guy said he puts green wax on all his bottles he isn't going to drink right away but how the hell can I trade something like that without knowing I'm not giving him a shit deal. Huna is easy and some of your bottles like Backyard should pick one up.
You guys rule! It's been so much fun trying so many new and so many awesome beers during these 5 months of trading. I my eyebrows obviously raise when all the 'hyped' beers are talked about on the boards as pure ambrosia. I appreciate the insight and will continue to bide my time where I am right now, drink awesome beer, continue trading, and slowly working out what beers I love and need to always trade for and what beers I can let ride. Is it Friday yet?!?
You'll find varying opinions on Prop, but the closest "objective" measure is to look at the ratings and ranking of the beer here on BA. Prop is one of the few beers that I'm in a permanent trade mode for. I had up to 6 of them at 1 point, but did end up trading a few away to get bigger wants (including for a DB Hunah). I simply love this beer. It's my most preferred BCBS variant, beating Coffee which was my favorite before Prop came out. I've had all variants, including Rare and Vanilla, except Bramble. Anyway, I agree with others that you'll need at least 1 "bigger" beer then add a mix of what you have. B&L isn't big enough, especially for DB Hunah. If you're willing to go over, you should be able to get a Prop with what you have there. A few months ago 6x BCBCS+ was a typical trade ratio for 1x Prop. B&L + Backyard + 2x BCBCS should get people really thinking (and a good trading partner will be able to throw in some local to even out $ a little). Good luck!
I traded a bunch of great, but not rare, beers for my Prop. I think all told, it was 1 WCMH, 1 CRWnB, 1 Sexual Chocolate, 1 Event Horizon, and 1 Mexican Cake. About 65 bucks worth of beer. After drinking said Prop...no regrets. Point of my post is: a) taste is subjective, b) all beers with hype will have critics and justifiably so, and c) it is possible to get a rare whale with somewhat less rare beers, but you'll have to grossly overpay.
You were soooo right! I just did a trade with a 1st timer and copied & pasted your conversation from December
I had my 1st coconut forward beer when I went to FL and had Last Snow at FB. As I took the 1st sip of my 3rd glass I thought to myself, 'sh!t I need to get my sweet tooth hands on a Prop' I really appreciate everyone's input and I'm glad I posted in this sub. I like this sub!
Send $50 worth of your beers and you can get a Prop. There are people out there who will do quantity for quality
