Having another Faust Hefe Hell. Getting much more banana out of it this time, I feel like I somehow missed that the first time around. Maybe it was something I ate. Still good, though!

Is this available year 'round? It would be my "go-to" fizzy yellow beer.

Next installment of Bayern bier is from Moosbacher Privat Landbrauerei in the Oberpfalz.
Thanks to Erzengel for this one!
Sampling their Kellerbier today , abv 5.2%

Appearance - Hmmmmmmmmmm, rather dark and filtered looking compared to kellerbiers i have sampled. Head has good staying power with some sticky lace.

Aroma - Lots of toasted malts with a spicy (nutmeg/cinnamon) note. No green appleyness as I might expect from such a style.

Taste - Hint of green apple coming through after a nice caramel/toasted malt note initially. Finish is delicate, soft and creamy

Mouthfeel - Light low carbonation as expected. Delicate on the palate.

Overall, it's a very tasty beer. A nice aroma/flavour profile wrapped up in a very moreish mouthfeel. Is it a traditional kellerbier? Definitely not, perhaps lacks the dry finish typical of the style but forgetting styles, I'd ask for another!

    Prost!

Not sure why they called it a Kellerbier, sounds like it's closer to a Märzen from the caramel/toasty flavors you mentioned.

I thought they had mislabelled the bottle but after consulting the website, it's pretty much as they describe it themselves!

The Moosbacher Kellerbier is/was exported to the US. My experiences mirror seanyfo's. No suspended yeast at all, a copper to bronze color, and toasty notes. It reminds me more of the Oktoberfest beers that (good) American breweries make than any kellerbier I've ever had. The only other beer labeled as a kellerbier I've ever had which was remotely similar was the Andechser Jubilaumsbier. Apparently that was an attempt to make a throwback dunkel.

This just in from Greifenklau's FB page:

Bald ist es soweit und die sommersaison beginnt endlich richtig. Laut Wetterbericht wird es täglich besser!
    Unser Biergarten ist bereit.
Und als kleines Schmankerl habe ich 4 Fässer von unserem Zwickel noch etwas verfeinert.

4 Fässer mit 4 verschiedenen Sorten Hopfen gestopft

Seems like there's something new being brewed/offered every day -- just from the region around Bamberg. Anyone who continues to claims that the German brewing industry is stagnant is fooling himself.

It's been quite cool the last 2 weeks, cloudy/rainy in the low 60s or so for highs, actually what I call a typical German summer...
but like they said above, next week starting tomorrow, the temps should hit the low 70s and go into the high 70s and... no rain in sight. Perfect beer weather, or in FFM, Äpplerwetter.

mmmm.... 4 different hops in each keg? or a different hop in each keg? Either way, it'd be great to go and try them.
This is an improvement, but again, it's still only green shoots we're seeing in Germany.

I didn't even know they were brewing a Zwickel (much less dry-hopping it). I'd be happy just to try the regular version!

That's like the Franconian version of "Firkin Friday."

For a guy who's down on the concept of German "craft beer" and experimentation, you sound pretty excited about new things from an old brewery.

After all, isn't the renewed interest in beer (as opposed to the price of beer) fueling things like this?

As I have said for years, new beers have been being introduced by Bamberg breweries regularly since the mid 90s. It's just that things are now getting more extensive press and attention from beer geeks (probably because of the mention of dry hopping). Also, I am for traditional beers and beer styles being revived, so whether it's Keesmann brewing a new Kellerbier in 1999 or Greifenklau brewing a Rauchbier or Zwickel in 2014, I'm for it. Personally I doubt I'd even try the dry hopped versions, but, yes, hops still seem to get people excited, so....

Wait… did someone say dry hopping?!

That's so 1989 to me (at least to my home-brewing).

The next installment comes from Altöttinger Hell-bräu, surprisingly from Altötting! in Oberbayern.

    Pilgerbier, a helles at 5.0%

Appearance - Pale apple juice gold with a slight haze. Creamy 2 finger head that has less than average staying power and lacing.

Aroma - Initially a big hit of vanilla after the pour. This faded away to reveal a very sweet malty aroma, bordering on sickly and a touchy musty.

Taste - Malty sweet grain dominance up front which slowly fades to a sticky finish. No obvious hop character and the finish is nowhere clean enough for the style.

Mouthfeel - Low creamy carbonation, sticky.

Overall - Definitely not one to seek out unfortunately. Lacks the refreshing hit of a quality helles and the malt profile is not delicate as I like it. Just too sweet!

    Prost!

Never heard of this beer, so thanks for heads up to avoid it if/when I see it.
Altötting? Is this the "craft" offshoot of Öttinger?

Altöttinger? So it's not even the new and improved Oettinger? No wonder it tastes bad. Seriously though, sounds like he may have gotten his hands on an old bottle. Was there a freshness date on the bottle?
