While checking out one of my local beer stores today and just took note of maybe five or six or so six-packs I've never had yet that seem fine enough to me. Perhaps it's because I've got a cellar of beer to drink, often look at beer ratings, am a beer snob, yada yada yada...

I was wondering if this would work or if it's been done before. I'm not necessarily saying I'd organize this, as I've never organized a BIF, but I am curious if it's something people would go for.

Everyone in the BIF buys 6 six-packs of beers they've never had before from their local "go-to", preferably from a local or regional brewery. Forget ratings and forget wants and forget bottle count. Maybe you'd have to check your target's "Hads" so it would be new to them too (might get sticky here). You pick six you've never had the "balls" to try for one reason or another.

You keep two bottles from each sixer for yourself. Then you ship out two bottles from each six-pack to two different targets. In return, you receive from two different senders. This way you're trying a total of 18 beers you've never had before and you're only out buying 6 six-packs (~$50). Everyone's getting the same and it would have to be 12 oz. bottles sold in six packs in order to divide it up evenly.

    Thoughts?

A lot of solid beer is sold in 4-packs. Don't most sixers usually cost 9.99-12.99?

True. My biased perspective comes from Montana, where we only have a couple of beers sold in four-packs (i.e. 16 oz. cans of Coldsmoke). And our price for most six-packs is ~$8. I could see all four-packs and sending to just one target.

Cool idea, but if I'm reading this correctly you'd be shipping to 2 people from each of 6 6-packs? 12 shipments per person is going to get ridiculously pricey, even if they're lightweight.

I think the way I tried to state it is that you'd only be shipping two boxes, one to two different targets. And in each box would be 2 bottles from each of the 6 six-packs. Does that make sense? You send out 12 bottles, twice, and you get 12 bottles, twice, plus the 12 you kept for yourself.

Makes more sense, I'm just a little dense. Thanks for the clarification.

    So basicaly:

    1.) Buy 6x 6-packs (36 beers)
    2.) Send 12 beers to target 1 (2 from each six-pack)
    3.) Send 12 beers to target 2 (2 from each six-pack)
4.) Keep 12 beers (2 from each six pack)
    5.) Get 12 beers from sender 1
    6.) Get 12 beers from sender 2

The only problem I see is that this will get pricey pretty fast. It's probably a 5$0-80 investment up front, plus the cost of shipping 2x 12-packs. I like the idea, but maybe it can be refined a bit.

I like the idea, perhaps maybe on a slightly smaller scale

Based upon this clarification, I think that just cutting the load in half would suffice for a more manageable BIF

    1) Buy 3x 6-packs (18 beers)
    2) Send 6 beers to target 1 (2 from each sixer)
    3) Send 6 beers to target 2 (2 from each sixer)
    4) Keep 6 beers (2 from each sixer)
    5) Get 6 beers from T1
    6) Get 6 beers from T2

Same exact concept, half the price. Even at the high end of $15/six-pack you're looking at tops of $85 all included (and that's only if your targets are both on the opposite side of the country).

    I'd be down for this!

What about doing a traditional style BIF with the first person buying 2 6 packs to ship out? The first target leaves 4 of the 12 (two of each style) to ship to the next target. The next person takes those 4 plus 4 of the two 6 packs. Again leaving 2 of each of the six packs. Each person (besides the first target I guess since they would end up with 8 of 2 six packs) would get 2 bottles of 4 different beers to try.
