surprised you pleasantly, if you forgot about a beer purchased years ago, and was a style of beer that should not have lasted or aged well (based on ABV, style or what this BA website suggests).

Had a Stone Levitation from 2010 yesterday (had forgotten I had the bottle until I removed some boxes in the basement)..

The smoothness of the caramel and malt really shone through, and the color was a little redder than I remember newer bottles...it shocked the heck out of me, to say the least!

Anyone else have any unexpected surprises that goes against the 8% rule or conventional thinking?

I had a Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock (5.5%) from 2004 in 2010 and is was UNREAL!!! I also have a mix-a-six of Troegs Nugget Nectar, ST 2XIPA, DFH 90min, DFH Burton Baton, Harpoon Imperial IPA, and Ithaca Flower Power that has been cellering for over a year now. I'm gonna let it go till two or three years and see what happens. Something tells me I might like a few of them.

Thanks for your experience! Makes me rethink the whole rush to redrink any beers in storage under 8 percent per se....
I hear great things in general of aging Burton Baton, (since it's a popular brand to age I'm told)

I still have a 2004 and a 2008 SA Chocolate Bock that I'm really looking forward to opening each at the 10 yr mark!

It certainly depends how they are stored. Mine never even saw daylight in the least from when I purchased them, and were always stored at about 50-60 degrees.

Burton Baton was the one that surprised me the most. It is fantastic at 2 and 3 years; I have not had any older than this.

I've definitely got the WINNER WINNER CD on this thread...

Ridgeway Insanely Bad Elf. Had some 2007 in my fridge I randomly found a few years ago (long before I could be considered a beer-"geek"). To it to a blind tasting back then (2009), and the guesses were Thomas Hardy and JW Lees.

It came out again in 2011, and I tried it fresh. Would have preferred BMC. Horrible!!! But somehow, age just makes that beer POP!!!

Lagunitas WTF was and is pretty good aged. That one surprised me, along with Avery Czar- although that one is the more likely candidate for aging, it just tasted way better with a couple of years on it.

Maharaja 13 with a year plus on it. Divine. Hated it fresh. Like a briskly hopped mango Pale ale.

I agree, that one was good with a year on it. I'm still saving a few for next winter.

I had a 3-4 year old left hand hefe I found in the bottom of my fridge that was pretty good. I don't like hefes to begin with and can't really compare it to fresh, but it was still well carbonated and smooth.

There was also a michelob pumpkin thing that was about that old too that wasn't half bad. Bland, but probably goot for someone who was wanting just a little pumpkin flavor.

Last night, drank a six-month old Old Chub and G'Knight - was very pleasantly surprised at how they matured. I was fully expecting to drainpour both of them.

I opened a 2007 Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence two weeks ago, not expecting much out of it...chocolate was still very present, balance was very good, no real oxidation at all...thought this one had aged remarkably well...even though I had no plans on holding onto it for half a decade when it went into the cellar originally.

DFH Indian Brown with about 9-12mos on it. Done at first by accident, now with absolute intent.

A 6.8% ABV American IPA...that is impressive...wouldn't have guessed! (Frozen in carbonite or something?)

Totally agree. I was given a case of the original spring 2010 batch, still have a few. They taste better every time. Baffles the shit out of me...

I had a Rogue Oregasmic that was a year6+ old because I remember not liking it the other bottle I bought so it went to the back of the cabinet and got forgotten about.

    I thought it was great.
