So today I checked back in with a little nanobrewery at the bottom of my road that I hadn't been in to in about a year, and got a half-growler of something very interesting to me.
Jack on Jack, their double IPA (Jack's Mountain Hop) aged for 6 months in a Jack Daniels barrel.
I wouldn't have thought the flavors would work together, but they do.
So I'm wondering, what do BAs think of double IPAs aged in whiskey/bourbon barrels? (I say whiskey because Jack isn't technically bourbon).

Honestly, once you age a double ipa it seems to me like you have a bourbon barrel aged barleywine (which isn't a bad thing).

Not exactly the same thing, but DFH Burton Baton is an oak-aged DIPA.....and it is freaking awesome. One of my most beloved beers of 2013.

I know some breweries do put out BBA DIPAs, but I haven't tried any yet, and I tend to side with @hambone85 above: most "aged" DIPAs aren't really DIPAs anymore, now, are they?

21st Amendment Hop Crisis is aged on oak spirals. Catawba Valley Brewing in Western NC makes Whiskey River IPA which is an IPA aged in bourbon barrels and is damn good, but not a double IPA.

Toppling Goliath Naughty Temple is a BA DIPA I believe.

Had a duclaw bba serum dipa. Nothing ipa'ish about it. Basically tasted like a backwoods bastard if it were aged with the in your face bcbs barrel notes. I personally loved it but if you were looking for any dipa notes, it wasn't there so like someone said...probably more like a bba barleywine which isn't a bad thing.

What's neat about this one is it retained its DIPA character without turning into a barleywine/strong ale.

While there are very few that I didn't mind, I think brewers need to realise that not every beer style belongs in a bourbon/whiskey barrel. IPAs being one of them.

Barleywines aged some amount of time in bourbon/whiskey barrels, ok, but on IPA's, especially the DIPA's I want and expect a bit a fresh hop blast still left in it. If some brewers are seeding the keg or the bottle with some fresh hops at the last minute, I would like to try it!

Have tried Founders Doom and Swamp Head BA 10-10-10. They were very different beers, and ultimately I couldn't deal with more than a half glass of either one. I can't say they were bad, but the style doesn't seem to stand up to the barrels well for me and gets overpowered by oak and/or sharp neat whiskey.

I think I'm with the "not really a good style for barrel aging" group. But that doesn't mean I represent everyone. Some people like chewing on oak and booze in their beer.

I've never had a BB IPA/DIPA that I fell in love with, personally I think just a nice fresh oak barrel lends better qualities to that style of beer. I'll give Doom some credit, it was pretty good. I'll take Burton Baton over it though, also Great Divide's 15th Anniversary was damn good as well.

Funny, I was just discussing this very issue today with someone else here on BA! This seems to be a very polarizing topic. People either seem very open to it or horrified by the whole idea. I myself really enjoyed Founder's Doom, though I was quite literally sneered at by a self-proclaimed "expert" for saying so! I was at a barrel-aged craft beer week event recently and was disappointed to see that the BBA DIPA (in Angel's Envy barrels!) that they'd advertised was not on offer. When I asked I was told "it didn't come out." Was disappointed, was looking forward to trying it. I am hoping to get my hands on some TG Naughty Temple, getting bottled this week!

I'm so glad I'm not the only that thought so.
I had this at a tasting and i was pretty much the only one amongst 20+ that really liked it.

Founders Doom and Looking Glass both left me rather disappointed. I will preface this by saying I am not a fan of Double Trouble. The barrel smooths out some of the rough edges that I do not enjoy in the base beer but the barrel does not do much to enhance the beer.

The only -bal DIPA that I really have an urge to sample again, if it were brewed again, is Zapata Bot. The combination og tequila and citrusy hops is far more intriguing than any whiskey barrel aging.

I think I speak for all BAs when I say that I wish I had a "little nano brewery at the bottom of my road."

The only barrel aged IPAs I've tried that come immediately to mind are DFH Burton Baton and Great Divide Rumble (but neither of these utilize whiskey barrels). I enjoyed both but prefer straight up IPAs.
