DIPA is an acronym, not an actual word, so your friend is dumb for thinking there's a correct way to pronounce it?

Oh, I agree! And I never said he was a friend, per se. More an acquaintance. But like I said, he swears some massive beer guru (don't remember specifically who he said, but like Michael Jackson or something) said that was the "correct" way to pronounce it. Hearing him say it makes me cringe every time. Ooof.

Lol that whole debate has been cracking me up. I'm curious if the guy then pronounces IPA like "eepa"?! Why anyone would take an acronym and not pronounce each individual letter is beyond me.

Funny! I ordered a Double IPA the other day at a "beer garden" and the waitress looked all confused. After a few seconds of deep thought she said, "Oh... do you mean the Dipah?" I'd never heard that before.

Lots of homebrewers will say "dih-puh" or "dee pa" It's an abbreviation of the acronym. Dee -pa has 2 fewer syllables than D-I-P-A.

There was a whole thread on Trappistes Rochefort pronunciation. It is Trah-PEEST ROSH-for.

I pronounce Pliny as Ply-knee; if you want it the other way add another N. Looks like it rhymes with tiny to me.

I call Weihenstephaner Vine-steff-ahner. I say YOU-ni-brew for Unibroue. I'm sure I screw up most of the Belgian stuff that isn't French. Pronouncing DIPA as a word is cracking me up. "I'll have a pint of Plinn-nee the Elder Deepuh, please.

I messed up this one when I visited Jester King.

I ordered an "Are You Fifty-Five," and was told it is pronounced "Russ." This was before I knew there was a story behind it.
(Yes, I know that is the old label, TX beer police. This occurred before the switch.)

    "Plinny" is a historical figure.
    "Pli-ney" is a "DEE-pah"

I've actually never heard anybody pronounce DIPA as anything other than "Double IPA"

Really? I was taught all letters were sounded. The r should be at the end.

Columbus Bodhi = boh-dee. No 'i' when ordering. Not Bod + High.

The Bavarians might keep an 'r' at the end but generally the pronunciation BennyBeer listed is pretty close to standard German.

Same goes with other German breweries ending in 'r':
    Ayinger - Eye-ing-ah
    Kulmbacher- Coolm-bakh-ah
    Mahrs- Mahz
    Andechser- Ahn-decks-ah
    Augistiner- Ow-gus-teen-ah
Erdinger- Aye'ah-ding-ah (the first syllable would be pretty close to how we perceive British people to say "air")
    Paulaner- Pow-lahn-ah

Tell him DIPA is just an acronym and usually when saying acronyms as words they follow very simple pronunciation guidelines. I.E. you wouldn't say "nay-sa" for NASA you wouldn't say "Wee-fee" for wi-fi. Honestly only an insane person would use those kinds of vowles when pronouncing acronyms.

That is not what I heard when I lived there. The Kulmbacher commercials on TV definitely pronounced the r. Not the rolling r, but an r to my ear.

So I hear 'ner , do you hear 'uh?

Or pronounce it DIE-puh, like Arnold saying diaper.

This'll never work. in this part of the country that's how you say "Dipper". If you did that and ordered a big DIPA it would sound like you were ordering stars. Now I don't know what to think.

"Let's see what's in the fridge today!" is the worst at pronouncing beer/brewery names and styles. He even butchers something as simple as Hefeweizen or weizen. I think he says "WIZN".

Ten Fiddy or Fyedee? And where did the name come from? Good stuff, though.

The name came from 10.5% ABV. Technically if it's spelled Fidy, then it should be "FYE-DEE", but it is in fact Ten "FIDDY".

We should have a vote to make this the generally accepted pronunciation but ONLY WHEN the Arnold accent is used.

Do you ever listen to Fydee Cent? His music is catchy.
